As parts of Maui County continue experiencing drought conditions and with warmer temperatures expected to increase water use this spring and summer, Hawaiʻi Water Service (Hawaiʻi Water) encourages its Maui customers to take advantage of conservation resources to help them save water—and money.

With another storm system bearing down on the Hawaiian Islands, the Maui County Council’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee focused its fiscal year 2027 review Wednesday on addressing emergency resilience and the future of the island’s water infrastructure.

County of Maui Department of Water Supply is continuing its community meetings on the future of Maui island’s drinking water supply with six in-person events in May. DWS is partnering with national nonprofit US Water Alliance to facilitate the meetings, which will help shape Maui’s water future.

The shutdown will affect services on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road from Bay Club Place including Hui Drive and Hui Road.

A Stage 1 water shortage is now in effect for customers in the Upcountry, Maui, service area, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply announced.

“We are seeing record-low flows in terms of the entire period of record on Kawaikōī, that’s about 109 years. In some of the East Maui streams, 105 years. But we’ve not seen low flows like this across the state to this extent ever before,” said Dr. Aryon Strauch, CWRM’s lead hydrologist.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and its Commission on Water Resource Management is looking to fill the Loea seat after V.R. Hinano Rodrigues of Maui withdrew his nomination.

“Building homes and making renovations to existing ones — and even wildfire recovery — will soon be easier throughout Maui County, now that Mayor Richard Bissen has signed a bill that was unanimously approved earlier this month by the Maui County Council,” according to Jonathan Helton policy analyst at the Grassroot Institute of Hawaiʻi.
