Following the success of Special Olympics Hawaii’s first Paradise Plunge, the fundraiser returns to make waves this summer for its second event.

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will begin accepting applications for Fall 2021 Tri-Annual Permits – for leagues and recreational programs – on Saturday, May 1 through 4 p.m. on Friday, May 7. Permit applications are limited to those for use of pools, fields and tennis courts during the period of Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021.

In its 36th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company today announced Hunter Shields of Maui High School as its 2020-21 Gatorade Hawai‘i Boys Cross Country Player of the Year. Shields is the first Gatorade Hawai‘i Boys Cross Country Player of the Year to be chosen from Maui High School.

Hideki Matsuyama and Jordan Spieth qualified for the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions after their recent PGA TOUR victories. Matsuyama and Spieth have qualified to join the other 14 TOUR winners next January in paradise when the Sentry Tournament of Champions returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Boards of The Oʻahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association and Nā Wāhine O Ke Kai have cancelled the 2021 championship canoe races: Hawaiian Airlines Nā Wāhine O Ke Kai (scheduled for Sept. 26) and Hawaiian Airlines Molokaʻi Hoe (scheduled for Oct. 10).

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa launched a campaign to raise funds for a project retrofitting the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. Funds raised for the complex will benefit UH Football by bringing home games from the Aloha Stadium to the UH Mānoa campus.

The Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association (HIADA) chose two Maui County teenagers as state’s winners of the 2021 NIAAA Student-Athlete Scholarship Essay Contest.

The student-athletes are quarantining at their places of residence and will be monitored by the athletic departmentʻs medical team and academic support staff. The 13 student-athletes who live on campus will be temporarily relocated off-campus today to quarantine and be cared for. None of the student-athletes who have tested positive have in-person classes this semester or live on campus.

The Maui Jim Maui Invitational revealed the 2022 tournament field for its 39th annual tournament slated for Nov. 21 through 23, 2022. Arkansas, Arizona, Cincinnati, Creighton, Louisville, Ohio State, San Diego State and Texas Tech will convene at the historic Lahaina Civic Center in 2022.

Special Olympics Hawaiʻi launched its first-ever Virtual High Five Campaign that aims to help and support local athletes with intellectual disabilities who have all been impacted by the unprecedented shutdown of in-person sports. The community can “send a virtual high five” by making a minimum donation of $5 by text now through the end of April.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education this week released guidelines for safely restarting student athletic programming for high schools that meet certain criteria beginning Monday.
