University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center researchers have identified a new, less aggressive form of mesothelioma that offers patients greater hope for survival and treatment success.

The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 2,300 cancer survivors and current cancer patients were living in the areas of Maui affected by the wildfires. To help patients deal with trauma and loss caused by their cancer diagnosis and the devastation of the fires, ACS is teaming up with Maui Cancer Resources to offer group therapy sessions.

Maui Cancer Resources and the American Cancer Society have partnered to launch a series of six monthly workshops, primarily focused on healing trauma and loss, in support of Maui cancer patients impacted by the devastating wildfires.

The recent wildfire crisis has caused some Maui patients to be left without medication, medical supplies, and access to cancer treatment as well as food, clean water and shelter.

The auction’s proceeds will benefit the Pacific Cancer Foundation, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge.

Due to caution because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the American Cancer Society has rescheduled its 8th annual Hope Gala Honolulu to take place as a virtual online auction running Oct. 30 through Nov. 6. This yearʻs theme is Midnight in Monte Carlo.

Proceeds from the event will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society Clarence T.C. Ching Hope Lodge Hawaiʻi, which offers housing accommodations to cancer patients from outer islands while they receive treatment on Oʻahu. 

The Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life will be held on July 20, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the War Memorial Special Events Arena.
