Automatic Voter Registration bill signed into law, set to begin Jan. 1, 2027 in Hawaiʻi

Act 67 modernizes Hawaiʻi’s voter registration system by automatically registering eligible residents to vote when they apply for or renew a Hawaiʻi driver’s license or state identification card, unless they choose to opt out.

Acting Governor update: Regan and Lopez out of state; Budget Director Seth Colby next in succession

Regan will travel to attend his son’s college graduation, while Lopez will travel to attend her mother’s funeral. Department of Budget and Finance Director Seth Colby, Ph.D., will serve as acting governor from June 11-15, in accordance with the state’s constitutional line of succession and continuity of government procedures.

Hawaiʻi expands Family Leave Law

Gov. Josh Green has signed Act 13 into law, expanding the Hawaiʻi Family Leave Law to allow eligible employees to take family leave for a qualifying military exigency involving an employee’s child, spouse, reciprocal beneficiary, sibling, grandchild, or parent serving in the United States Armed Forces. The law takes effect July 1, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

While traveling, Green will retain executive authority and remain in regular contact with state leadership and cabinet members. Acting Lt. Gov. Keith Regan will oversee day-to-day government operations in Hawaiʻi and serve as acting governor during the governor’s absence.

Governor signs emergency proclamation funding Operation Hoʻopauahi in preparation of wildfire season

2026 Central Pacific Hurricane Outlook calls for above-normal season with 5-13 tropical cyclones

Forecasters are predicting an above-normal hurricane season for the central Pacific basin this year. NOAA’s outlook for the 2026 hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30, predicts a 70% chance of an above-normal season, with at total of 5-13 tropical cyclones across the central Pacific in the forecast.
