May is Hawaiʻi Invasive Species Awareness Month.

Crater Road has reopened to through traffic as of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024. The road had been closed since July 27 as a safety precaution as crews continued work to contain the 574-acre Crater Road Fire which began on July 10.

A brush fire that started on Saturday evening off of Crater Road, burned 2-3 acres. Although the fire is fully contained, crews continued mop-up operations today.

The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Inc. (Takitani Foundation) has named 10 high school students from Maui County as scholarship recipients of its annual Legacy Scholarship Program.

Upcountry wildfire survivors discussed the loss of their homes and the unwavering support of community volunteers who came to their aid in the days following disastrous wildfires on Maui. “It only takes a spark to start a fire. Sometimes you just need that one little spark to get a response going, and the community has been the fuel for that,” said volunteer, Kyle Ellison.

The status and future of Upcountry agriculture is the focus of the Kula Community Association’s upcoming meeting. The community meeting begins at 7 p.m. on June 14 at the Kula Community Center.

Skyline Hawaiʻi – the United States’ first commercial zipline company– celebrated 20 years in operation on Dec. 16 by inviting staff and community partners to its original Haleakalā Ranch location to plant its 20,000th native tree.

The busy agenda includes visits to Haleakalā Ranch to discuss the critical axis deer problem, and to Pā‘ia to witness the dramatic coastal erosion of the Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission and cemetery site. 

Featuring lessons from local farmers, ranchers, and agriculture educators, the Agriculture in the Classroom program is all about sharing knowledge of local agriculture with second-graders.

Upon further inspection, an Explosive Ordnance Team from the Army found the device to be a live 60 MM High Explosive mortar with the safety pin and primer still intact.

Effective Sept. 15, Scott Meidell will be promoted to Chief Operating Officer and John Kreag will be promoted to Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer. Rounding out the new leadership at Haleakalā Ranch is the addition of Luke Estes who will join the company as Senior Vice President/Real Estate on Oct. 4.

Until pandemic school regulations enable more than 1,200 second-graders to go Upcountry again, Maui County Farm Bureau is offering a virtual version of its popular “Agriculture in the Classroom” program with video and an activity booklet featuring six lessons from local farmers, ranchers and agriculture educators.

The completed phase marks a new milestone in restoring and regenerating Pōhakuokalā Gulch, an important watershed in Upper Kula – the project also creating jobs for the unemployed in 2020.
