Beginning after sunset Thursday, March 12, 2026, Haleakalā National Park will be closed due to dangerous weather conditions. The closure will go into effect for both the Summit District and Kīpahulu District.

The Crater Road Fire remained 80% contained at 574 acres at last report, with the closure of the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park still in effect. The fire started nine days ago on July 10. Containment and acreage has not changed since Monday, July 15.

A year ago today, nearly 700 gallons of diesel fuel spilled at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex at Haleakalā’s summit. Since then Air Force reports its officials have worked with the Maui community and Native Hawaiian organizations to remediate the site.

On the Big Island summits, southwest winds of 50 to 70 mph will increase to 60 to 80 mph Tuesday. On the high summit of Haleakalā on Maui, southwest winds will build to 45 to 55 mph tonight and increase to 50 to 60 mph Tuesday.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park license plate sales have generated $60,000 to support the parkʻs Nēnē Monitoring Program.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park is temporarily closed due to winter weather conditions effective April 11, 2021 at 3 p.m. The closure begins at the Summit Entrance Station on Haleakalā Highway extending up to the summit. The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park will reopen once conditions improve.

US Congressman Kai Kahele and his Deputy Chief of Staff Ikaika Māhoe, took part in a visit to the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Maui Research and Technology Park on March 19.

A wind advisory is in effect at the Summit of Haleakalā until 6 o’clock this evening. The National Weather Service is forecasting SE winds of 35 to 50 mph with higher gusts at the location. Winds this strong can make driving difficult. Motorists should use extra caution.

The Headquarters Visitor Center (at the 7,000 foot elevation) in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park is temporarily closed from today through Friday, Dec. 6, for the installation of new exhibits.

Hurricane force winds with gusts of up to 85 mph are forecast this weekend for the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park.

All park interpretive and educational programs are offered. Online reservations for the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā are required 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Road construction is scheduled to take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and should have minimal impact on sunrise visitors.

Since April of last year, Waele ma Haleakalā volunteers have pulled 6,342 invasive pines and almost 2,500 invasive plants.

A high wind warning is in effect for Haleakalā Summit on Maui, with north winds of 55 to 70 mph expected. A wind advisory is in effect elsewhere in Hawaii.
