Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers’ nonprofit Board of Directors announced the appointment of Sue R. Sadecki as the nonprofit’s new executive director. Today, the agency welcomed Sadecki on her first day at work and held a blessing ceremony at its Wailuku shelter.

More than 140 people were evacuated on Tuesday from the Westside Center shelter operated by Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers. Of those evacuated, over 25 were taken by KHAKO staff to the Wailuku shelter for emergency housing. 

The man who founded the Pacific Cancer Institute in 1993 in Wailuku, has established a private nonprofit foundation that is providing laptop computers to deserving high school students.

Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers, Inc., Maui’s largest homeless shelter provider, today announced that it has received a $5 million dollar grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund—the largest private gift in the organization’s history.

Leonard Sakai was selected Maui Non Profit Directors Association Humanitarian of the Year for his work with Habitat for Humanity Maui, and Sentry Insurance captured the Community Business Award for its volunteer program with the PGA Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.

“Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez, and Shep Gordon stopped by for a tour of the Food Bank,” said Marlene Rice, Development Director at the Maui Food Bank. “It was wonderful to meet Jeff, and we are very grateful for the generosity he has extended to Maui Food Bank and other nonprofits on Maui.”

Maui Economic Opportunity Youth Services intermediate and high schoolers are busy spreading holiday cheer making ornaments for kupuna and collecting toys and infant care necessities for keiki at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers.

The H.T. Hayashi Foundation awarded $195,000 in total grant funding to five local organizations supporting keiki and Hawaiʻi’s culture and the arts at its February board meeting. The grant funding is the first round of funding in 2021 – the foundation granted more than $814,000 to local community organizations across the state in 2020.
