One year after breaking ground, Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation announced continued progress on the construction of Hale Pilina, an affordable rental housing development that will provide 178 homes for Maui families in need of stable, affordable housing.

The County of Maui Department of Housing is seeking applications for affordable housing projects that will be funded by the Affordable Housing Fund in Fiscal Year 2027. Maui County is far behind its goal of creating 5,000 affordable homes for local people over five years, according to an update this week on the Maui County Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan. Since the plan was finalized a couple years ago, 675 homes are being built and another 943 homes are approved for construction. Assuming that 600 rent and homeownership opportunities are secured through other projects outlined in the plan, roughly 3,000 homes are needed in under three years.

In June 2022, 46% of Maui Now survey respondents reported that residential rental prices spiking 41% on Maui strongly affected them, 25% said they were somewhat affected, and 29% said that they were not at all affected.

Maui Now received 544 verified responses with 90% identifying as Maui County residents and 10% identifying as non-residents. A total of 86% of respondents identified as registered voters and 14% as non-registered voters.

Waikapū Country Town is the County’s largest planned residential housing development in decades.  Original plans called for 1,146 market-priced units and 287 residential workforce housing units, with the potential for 146 ʻohana units. If approved, Mayor Victorino’s proposal will increase the total number of residential workforce housing units to 500.

The Maui Financial Opportunity Center, launched as a public-private partnership between Maui County, Hawai‘i Community Foundation and Hawaiian Community Assets, has reached its first-year goal of working with more than 1,000 local families to improve financial stability in order to qualify for affordable housing.
