Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair celebrates 16 years of agricultural education and celebration with its return to War Memorial Complex on Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair takes place today, Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at War Memorial Special Events Field.  This year at AgFest, Maui County Farm Bureau (MCFB) honors the legacy of “Chinese in Agriculture on Maui.” The Wo Hing Society presents this free special exhibit from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., outlining the history and lasting impact of Chinese immigrants and settlers. The Wo Hing Society Hall stood in historic Lahaina Town as a symbol of Chinese culture for more than a century before it was destroyed in the fires.

If you stop by the Haleakalā Creamery booth at Maui AgFest next weekend, don’t be startled if you’re greeted by a goat. Rebecca Woodburn-Rist, owner of Maui’s “Farm to Spoon” goat dairy, will be selling her delicious goat milk caramel sauces and “Goatlato” ice cream with a little help from the herd. 

The summer edition of “EAT THINK DRINK,” hosted by Hawaiʻi Agricultural Foundation (HAF), will feature two Maui business that delve into the heart of Hawaiʻi’s beef industry. The event will include a panel discussion with industry leaders, as well as a dinner featuring locally sourced beef.

University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges with culinary arts programs were among 14 beneficiaries of $195,300 donated by the Hawai‘i Ag & Culinary Alliance, founder of the annual Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival.

Passed by the Legislature earlier this year, HB1382, now Act 54, allows nonprofits to donate wild game meat to “under-resourced” communities, including the homeless.

The Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival has donated $380,000 to various local organizations, bringing the Festival’s total giving to $3.5 million since its inception.

Marking the 14th celebration of AgFest, this year’s affair commemorates the important role of agriculture on Maui with all the popular signature events, education, food and fun—plus a few new features. This year’s Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair takes place on Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Special Events Field.

The Maui County Farm Bureau honored Kai Pelayo, the community affairs manager with Bayer-Maui, as its Member of the Year for 2022.

For the new two-year term, the Maui County Farm Bureau retained eight directors and elected two new directors including Ethan Romanchak and Theresa Thompson. Warren K. Watanabe is the executive director.

Featuring lessons from local farmers, ranchers, and agriculture educators, the Agriculture in the Classroom program is all about sharing knowledge of local agriculture with second-graders.

Officially within the 30-day mark of the Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair, event presenter Maui County Farm Bureau announces the 12 dishes by the 12 participating chefs for this year’s Grand Taste. The 2022 Grand Taste event takes place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Ulupono Initiative. 

For the new two-year term, Maui County Farm Bureau retained some current board members and elected some new ones, including Bobbie Patnode and Jayson Watts.

This year’s winners are “Member of the Year,” Heidi Watanabe; “Farm Family of the Year,” the Hegele Family; and Mike Lyons Award, Hawaiian Electric Company.

Premiering tonight, Monday, July 12, at 7 p.m. is Maui’s own big wave surfer, community advocate and YouTube cooking sensation Ian Walsh. A new episode will air every Monday for the next 12 weeks at 7 p.m. on Spectrum OC16.

Until pandemic school regulations enable more than 1,200 second-graders to go Upcountry again, Maui County Farm Bureau is offering a virtual version of its popular “Agriculture in the Classroom” program with video and an activity booklet featuring six lessons from local farmers, ranchers and agriculture educators.

“Cooking Hawaiian Style,” a locally produced television show, set up its outdoor kitchen at Kula Country Farms and Kaonoulu Ranch on the Valley Isle this week.

The 2020 member award winners are: Alex Franco, retired president of Maui Cattle Company, “Member of the Year” recipient; Woody and Carmen Goble of Goble’s Flower Farm,  “Farm Family of the Year” recipient; Nelson Okumura of VIP Food Service and Island Grocery, “Friend of Agriculture” recipient; and David Chun of Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s office, “Mike Lyons Award” recipient.

The organization says the results revealed a “strong objection” to the proposal with 84% of farmers and ranchers responding saying “no” to the ballot question: “Shall the Charter be amended, effective July 1, 2022, to establish a Department of Agriculture to develop a sustainable regional agricultural system for Maui County?”
