Maui Council committee forwards Pāʻia Town project to the Maui Planning Commission

A mixed-use development proposed for 40 acres of former sugarcane land near Pāʻia won committee approval Wednesday, moving a project that would bring up to 170 homes, commercial businesses, a medical clinic and a public parking lot to the next stage of a years-long entitlement process.

HECO 8 p.m. update: 3,300 customers on Oʻahu’s North Shore without electricity, Crews responding to outage in Waiheʻe, Maui

About 3,300 customers in the North Shore, O‘ahu flood zone are expected to remain without electricity until assessment and repairs can be completed. On Maui, crews are currently responding to an outage in the Waihe‘e area affecting about 1,000 customers.

Pā‘ia Youth & Cultural Center hosts open house on new youth center, Jan. 8

The new Pāʻia Floral shop opened its doors over the weekend, offering a fresh find for flower seekers on Maui’s North Shore. The business is Native Hawaiian and wahine-owned, and is a sister company to Pukalani Floral and Kanuihele, a business focused on music, dance and craft.

Large swell to peak today at 30 feet

The National Weather Service says a large west-northwest swell building down the island chain will peak today, then slowly ease tonight through Monday.

High Surf Warning as XL swell builds down the island chain

A large to extra-large west-northwest swell will build down the island chain today and peak tonight and early Sunday, according to the NWS.

Second XL swell to keep High Surf Warning posted until 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29

Surf is expected to be in the 20-30 foot range along the north facing shores, and up to 18-22 feet along affected west facing shores today.  The swell will have a brief decline tonight, but a second extra-large NNW swell will fill in on Thursday, bringing surf as high as 35 feet to the north shores. 

23 acres of north shore Maui coastline to be focus of management plan in the new year

In early 2024, the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will begin working on a management plan for 23 acres of newly acquired county land on Maui’s north shore, which includes Wawau Point, often referred to as “Baby Beach.”

Maui council approves resolution to acquire 45 acres of A&B lands
