Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union employees raised $51,370 for local nonprofits through two fundraising initiatives held earlier this year, according to an announcement this week.

Amala and Kaʻa streets, along with Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului, reopened to the public Saturday morning, July 19, 2025 following a two-day cleanup and maintenance effort by County crews.

In August 1999 youth leader Joyce Kawakami accidentally founded a food program when she noticed some of her students were hungry and had no food at home. Despite sneaking groceries to these students to protect their privacy, they shared this act of kindness with other families in need who began coming for help also. Weekly food distributions became a regular part of life for the Kawakami family. Over 25 years Feed My Sheep grew from feeding six families to 350 families every week. 

On Tuesday, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) Hawaiʻi unveiled its warehouse stocked with beds, comforters, and other household essentials to begin its aid to at least 300 wildfire-afflicted homeowners in a multi-year rebuilding process.

In a significant boost to aid Lahaina homeowners affected by last year’s wildfires, American Savings Bank (ASB) and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) have announced an allocation of $400,000 to Hawaiʻi Community Lending through the FHLB Member Impact Fund.

Children and staff of Princess Nahiʻenaʻena Elementary School and Kamehameha III Elementary were treated to a Lahaina Toy Surprise and Delight event on Wednesday. Council Vice Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura (Upcountry residency District)  and Presiding Officer Pro Tempore Tasha Kama (Kahului residency district) today announced they will host a wildfire relief “Resources for Religious Leaders” informational meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023 from 9 a.m. to noon at the UH Maui College Pilina Building Events Center.

The Salvation Army is issuing a call to action, seeking dedicated volunteers for its Maui Disaster Relief Call Center with two Oʻahu locations. In the wake of the recent wildfires that have impacted the Maui community, the Salvation Army is rallying local support to aid residents on Maui. The organization is urgently seeking 15-20 volunteers with excellent communication skills and a passion for community and social services.

As West Maui prepares for the return of tourism on Oct. 8, restaurants and businesses are adjusting to the ongoing need of residents while also gauging services for visitors. Since Aug. 10, Chef Peter Merriman and his team have fed thousands of displaced residents impacted by the fires, giving free meals to 1,000 people daily and serving approx. 45,000 meals in the first seven weeks of response. 

An Upcountry Resource Fair is being held on Sept. 18 at the Kula Community Center to provide fire disaster relief information from different agencies.

Volunteers transformed the former Radio Shack at Azeka Shopping Center in Kīhei into a well-organized distribution hub for clothes and goods for children, from newborns to teenagers.

A new process is in place for Maui residents wishing to submit DNA to be used in the identification of family members who are unaccounted for and may be fire victims.

The Family Assistance Center is moving from its current location at the Kahului Community Center to the Hyatt Regency’s Monarchy Ballroom, located at 200 Nohea Kai Drive in Kāʻanapali, effective Friday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. FAC services at the Kahului Community Center will end as of 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17.

The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division’s Love Beyond campaign raised $689,064 and distributed 30,283 Angel Tree gifts during the 2022 holiday season.

With just five bell-ringing days left before Christmas, donations in Hawaii are currently tracking at 67% of a $750,000 goal for The Salvation Army’s Red Kettles holiday campaign.

Through Dec. 10, 2022, individuals can pick-up Angel Tree tags at Maui County Federal Credit Union branches in Kahului, Lahaina and Wailuku.
