Maui emergency crews responded to a report of a shark attack incident in the area known as “Sand Piles” at Waiehu on Maui at around 7:08 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. The 61-year-old male patient was transported in critical condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room with injuries to his leg, authorities tell Maui Now. He remains at the hospital where he is receiving further care.

The woman reported to authorities that while she was surfing a shark she described as a 10-12-foot-long Galapagos shark bit her board and launched her into the air. She landed on the shark which then bit through her board leash, according to an account detailed by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Officials say she was able to get back onto her board and swim to shore without further incident.  

The search resumes today for a woman who went missing Thursday while snorkeling in waters off of South Maui. The US Coast Guard is describing the missing individual as a 60 year-old female.

A woman was transported to the hospital for a “serious bite,” from an apparent shark incident at Pāʻia Bay on Maui’s north shore Saturday afternoon, Sept. 3.

County officials say a 35-year-old man fell off his kite foil about 400 yards off shore of the beach canoe hale. As he was getting back on his board, a shark reportedly bit him in the back side of his upper leg. The man sustained 2- to 3-inch lacerations and was able to make his way back to shore.

A father and son are safe after the kayak they were in reportedly sank during an encounter with a shark off of Ukumehame in West Maui today.

A 73-year-old man from California, snorkeling off Kahekili “Airport” Beach in front of the Westin Kāʻanapali Ocean Resort, was bitten by a shark this morning, state officials confirm.

Using new DNA barcoding technology, researchers at the University of Hawai‘i have determined a tiger shark caused fatal injuries to a 56-year-old Nāpili man, who was bitten at Maui’s Honolua Bay on Dec. 8. Separately, by measuring bite marks on the surfer’s board, they have determined the shark was approximately 14.3-feet-long. 

Maui police have identified the man who suffered fatal injuries from an apparent shark bite at Honolua Bay on Tuesday as Robin Warren, 56, of Nāpili.

An adult male surfer who was bitten in an apparent shark encounter Tuesday morning at Honolua Bay, has since succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday evening, Maui Now has confirmed.

An adult male surfer was reportedly taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center after suffering from an apparent shark bite at Honolua Bay on Maui, where a surf competition was set to get underway at 10 a.m. today. 

The Maui Police Department’s Chief Tivoli Faaumu today honored Triston Kahookele-Santos with the Department’s Civilian Medal of Valor for his help in keeping a group of visitors safe after a shark bit the paddle board of a fellow ocean goer earlier this month.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has continued the beach closure from Mana Kai near Keawakapu to Palauea “White Rock” until at least noon today, Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020.

Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement confirms the victim of today’s shark incident was a 65 year-old man from California. A witness reported the man was swimming about 150 yards offshore.

County of Maui Lifeguards at Mākena State Park closed the ocean waters to park users because of a 12-foot tiger shark seen swimming about 50-feet from shore.

For centuries, traditional Hawaiian chants have warned about an increased risk of shark bites in the fall, when the wiliwili tree blooms.

Ocean safety lifeguards temporarily closed several beach parks in Kihei at around 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, because of a shark sighting at Kamaʻole Beach Park I. The sighting comes a week after a shark attack reported at the same beach on Nov. 14, 2016.

The shark warning and beach closure advisory for South Maui has been lifted as of 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, following a suspected shark attack reported on Monday morning fronting Kamaʻole Beach Park I.

Kamaʻole Beach Parks 1, 2 & 3 have been shut down due to a shark attack reported at around 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. Emergency crews are on scene. DLNR are monitoring the area.
