Imagine Olympic windsurfing or kite surfing competitors stopping at Ho’okipa and Kanaha beach parks on Maui to practice on their way to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games in less than 3 years — it’s an idea that state and county officials hope can spur the economy.

Maui County provided $1.5 million to bring back the beloved fair that was held for 97 years, but not since 2019 due to reasons that included the COVID-19 pandemic and rising transportation costs for amusement rides.

The Maui County Fair is back Oct. 2-5 at the War Memorial Complex after a six-year absence, but organizers are now faced with the challenge of fundraising an additional $500,000 for infrastructure beyond the $1.5 million already allocated by the Maui County Council.

To make the return of the fair happen, Maui County is providing $1.5 million in funding — about double the cost of the event the last it was held in 2019.

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation issued a traffic advisory from 6 a.m. to noon Wednesday, June 18, 2025, for roadways surrounding War Memorial Complex and Keōpūolani Regional Park in Kahului due to the large, sold-out professional sporting event Rams Mauicamp. Also, public facilities will be closed to recreational use during the event.

Areas of the War Memorial and Keōpūolani complexes in Kahului will be closed briefly this week for events and training, according to the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation.

Areas of War Memorial Complex in Wailuku will temporarily close to accommodate public events for four days in May, according to the County of Maui Department of Park and Recreation.

While the planned yearlong renovation of War Memorial Stadium will interrupt high school and public use, the long-term goal includes attracting major sporting events, including the Hula Bowl, and large concerts and rodeos.

Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 22, for testing of pool guard trainees. The facility will reopen from 1 to 4 p.m. that day for lap and recreational swimming.

The War Memorial Complex tennis courts and Coach Soichi Sakamoto Swimming Pool will be closed on Saturday, June 1, for the Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair being held at the complex.

Motorists should be aware of area traffic on Saturday night during the Maoli concert, which is expected to bring thousands to the War Memorial Special Events Field from 4:30 to 10 p.m.

War Memorial Complex’s stadium parking lot, Little League fields, tennis courts and pool will close ahead of Baldwin and Maui high school graduation ceremonies set for Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at War Memorial’s stadium and track and field, the county Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

War Memorial football stadium and Satoki Yamamoto track and field will be open today and Saturday to host Hawaiʻi High School Athletics Association State Track & Field Championships, the county Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

The War Memorial Football Stadium and Satoki Yamamoto Track and Field Facility will undergo field maintenance from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2022, with the Department of Parks and Recreation’s beautification turf team.

Permit applications will be accepted for recreational use of pools, gyms, fields, stadiums and tennis courts during the activity period of Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022.

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation will accept applications for Winter/Spring 2022 Tri-Annual Permits through this Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, for leagues, and recreational programs. Permit applications are for the recreational use of pools, gyms, fields, stadiums, and tennis courts during the period of Jan. 1 to April 15, 2022.

War Memorial Complex facilities will be closed to the general public on May 21 and May 22 for graduation ceremonies hosted by Baldwin and Maui high schools, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

Satoki Yamamoto Track at War Memorial Stadium will be open for running and walking only from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additionally, the Maui Interscholastic League will be allowed to use the facility for track practice from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

$2.15 Million Improvement Project Starts Today: The complex’s parking lot has not undergone any major repair work since it opened alongside the stadium in 1969.
