Gov. Josh Green today announced the upcoming opening of Kīpūola Kauhale, the state’s first and largest kauhale village on a neighbor island. The transport will involve trucks in a caravan that will move the homes from the staging area near the Kahului small boat ramp, along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400), to Lahaina.

Temporary housing units to be moved onto private and secondary sites in West Maui
FEMA began moving temporary housing units from the staging site in Lahaina to private and secondary sites on June 26, 2025. Movement will continue over the next several weeks, providing further available housing for wildfire survivors in West Maui. The first unit was moved to a private site on Thursday, with additional units to follow.

Hauling will take place nightly on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8, along with Feb. 12 through 14, all beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Nearly one-year after Lahaina wildfires: debris clearance at 88%, more than two dozen permits issued to rebuild
Gov. Josh Green provided an update on the ongoing Maui wildfire recovery as the one year mark nears on Aug. 8, 2023. As of July 5, 2024, the state had cleared all individuals from the non-congregate sheltering (NCS) program at hotels; however, there were still 62 families that were finalizing their arrangements with the federal government to transition into longer-term housing. That’s down from the 3,071 families that were being accommodated in hotels in the aftermath of the wildfires.
