A Maui County Council committee voted 5-1 Wednesday to recommend passage of two land use bills that would clear the way for the proposed Hoʻonani Village mixed-use development on former sugarcane fields near Kahului Airport, overriding deferral recommendations from three county departments with concerns about infrastructure shortfalls.

The Maui Planning Commission is scheduled to review land use bills regarding the proposed Hoʻonani Village project near Kahului Airport, as well as legislation regarding accessory dwelling units, agricultural retail structures and electric vehicle charging stations.

Developers have filed an environmental impact statement preparation notice for the Hoʻonani Village mixed-use development proposed for 1,600 residential apartment units near the old Puʻunēnē sugar mill on 166 acres off of Hansen Road in Kahului.

A council committee will consider bills to change a zoning condition for the Pulelehua mixed-use project in Kahana and to change the zoning and amend the Maui Island Plan for the Hoʻonani Village mixed-use project in Pu‘unēnē at separate meetings on Wednesday, Councilmember Tamara Paltin announced.

Maui traffic delays can be expected from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next day on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation. Trucks will be hauling temporary modular homes for wildfire survivors from a baseyard on Hansen Road to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Kilohana temporary housing site in Lahaina.

A 24-year-old Kula man suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a car while walking on the asphalt shoulder of the Hāna Highway in Kahului on Thursday night, police said.

Police believe speed may be a factor in a fatal traffic collision that claimed the life of a bicyclist on Pūlehu Road in Kahului Thursday.

Pūlehu Road is now open. It was closed overnight and into Tuesday following a motor vehicle accident that knocked down a utility pole and lines across the roadway.

Maui Veterans Highway is closed south bound between Hansen Road and Mehameha Loop and north bound from Piʻilani Highway, due to a single motor vehicle accident.

Update: Nov. 26, 2022, 5:20 a.m.: Hansen Road remains closed. Hawaiian Electric Company reports that weather has caused further issues. Work is estimated to take another 3-4 hours.

The intersection of Pūlehu Road and Hansen Road will be converted to an all-way stop, with stop signs posted at all four entry points, effective on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022. Once the stop signs are installed, all motorists will be required to stop before proceeding through the intersection. 

A motorist was sent to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries following a head-on collision on Hansen Road in Kahului on Tuesday morning.  Maui police say speed is suspected as a factor in the crash.

Hansen Road is now open as of 8:56 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020.
