Eric Yeaman has been selected by the state Probate Court as the newest member of Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha’s Board of Trustees. He will fill the vacancy created upon the closing of Robert K.W.H. Nobriga’s term, which ended on June 30, 2025.

Hawaiian Electric employees continue a long-standing tradition of supporting communities with the publication of their latest fundraiser cookbook, “Generations of Grinds: Years of Tasty Traditions,” featuring a collection of over 130 all-new, time-tested recipes from their family archives that celebrate Hawaiʻi’s multi-cultural flavors and traditions.

To maintain safe and reliable service, Hawaiian Electric contractors will be conducting tree trimming along Piʻiholo Road in the Upcountry Maui area on Thursday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With hurricane and wildfire season coming up, Hawaiian Electric hosts a West Maui Emergency Preparedness Open House event to help prepare residents and their communities on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria. 

With hurricane and wildfire season coming up, Hawaiian Electric is hosting two emergency preparedness open house events to help prepare residents and their communities. One will be held Saturday, April 26 at the King Kekaulike High School Cafeteria. The other will be held Saturday, May 3, at the Lahaina Intermediate School Cafeteria.

This information will allow Hawaiian Electric to identify the specific areas where seabirds are traveling and to understand the potential for adverse impacts caused by company-owned utility lines. 

The Upcountry Energy Resilience Project, a community-led initiative, will host a discussion about “Understanding Your Electric Bill” on Thursday, March 6 at 4 p.m. via Zoom. This virtual meeting aims to address the systemic issues and common questions related to the high cost of electricity for Upcountry Maui residents.

Hawaiian Electric will be using a helicopter to perform routine power line inspections in the West Maui area above Honoapiʻilani Highway from Lahaina to Mahinahina on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Exact times and locations are subject to change depending on weather conditions.

As of 11:20 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, there were more than 2,000 customers that remained without power in Maui County out of about 72,000 accounts. The outages are spread out in various parts of the island including parts of Kula, Makawao, Haʻikū, Piʻiholo and Olinda.

Since launching its expanded wildfire safety strategy one year ago, Hawaiian Electric reports making significant improvements to reduce wildfire risk from its equipment. A joint informational briefing hosted by the Committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection, the Committee on Public Safety and Intergovernmental and Military Affairs, and the Committee on Energy, Economic Development, and Tourism takes place at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024. The purpose of this joint informational briefing is for Hawaiian Electric Company to present its Wildfire Mitigation Plan, which was ordered by the Public Utilities Commission.

Three Hawaiʻi state departments were honored at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers 2024 State IT Recognition Awards in New Orleans Oct. 1 for their technology project entries, including one taking the top award in the Emerging & Innovative Technologies category.

Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union (Hawaiʻi State FCU) today announced that Brennon Morioka, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Darren Nakao, executive vice president and chief financial officer at UHA Health Insurance, have been elected to serve on its volunteer board of directors. Monica Toguchi Ryan, owner and president of Highway Inn, has been reelected to the board for her third and final term. Morioka, Nakao and Toguchi Ryan will all serve new three-years terms, effective June 22, 2024.

Suspension of service disconnections for all Hawaiian Electric customers on Maui has been extended through at least Aug. 31, 2024, in accordance with the extension of Gov. Josh Green’s emergency proclamation. Maui customers who are financially challenged by the devastating wildfires will not have to worry about potential disconnection of their electric service, according to a company announcement.

Hawaiian Electric Company will host Emergency Preparedness Open Houses in Upcountry and West Maui to discuss their Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program. A separate event is planned in Central Maui as part of the Maui County Disaster Preparedness Expo.

Ameresco, Inc. is hosting a open house community meeting on Tuesday, May 7, to provide information and seek community input about its ‘Ūkiu Energy project located across from the Central Maui Landfill behind Hawaiian Electric’s Waena substation.

Maui attorney, Jan K. Apo, who is representing hundreds of families impacted by the August 2023 Maui wildfires, lauded Monday’s federal court decision to remand some 90 Lahaina fire cases back to the state court on Maui. 

Hawaiian Electric is seeking public comment for the preliminary draft of the Integrated Grid Planning Request for Proposals, the latest phase of clean energy procurements aimed at stabilizing rates and advancing energy equity, growing the marketplace for large-scale renewables, creating a modern and resilient grid, and securing reliability as existing fossil fuel generators reach the end of their useful lives.

Update: (11:50 a.m., Feb. 29, 2024) Power has been restored to a majority of customers affected by an outage in the Mahinahina / Kahana area. The outage was first reported at around 7:40 a.m. By 11:50 a.m., all but 50 customers had power restored. Crews remain on scene where work to complete repairs is underway.

Hawaiian Electric will postpone the launch of its new rooftop solar and energy storage programs by one month while the company makes changes approved by the Public Utilities Commission, the company announced. The new programs, originally scheduled to launch March 1, will now be available to customers starting April 1.
