Court ruling protects recovery funds for Maui Wildfire survivors

Gov. Josh Green welcomed a court ruling that limits attorney fees in Maui wildfire settlement claims, calling the decision an important step toward ensuring more recovery funds reach survivors and families directly impacted by the Aug. 8, 2023, Maui wildfires.

June 15 to July 4: Pole relocations along Waiehu Beach Road to impact traffic 

To maintain reliable service, Hawaiian Electric crews will be working to relocate 11 poles along Waiehu Beach Road between Kahekili Highway and Maka‘ala Drive, from Monday, June 15 to Saturday, July 4 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday. No service interruption is expected.

Hawaiian Electric continues to closely monitor high winds and humidity levels in the Kawaihae and Waikoloa areas on Hawai‘i Island, as well as in West Maui and parts of Ōmaʻopio and Pūlehu in Kahului. If necessary, the company may implement its Public Safety Power Shutoff program within the next 24 hours and proactively shut off power in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk. 

Maui Council panel OKs $240K in additional legal fees for wildfire litigation

The Maui County Council’s Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize an additional $240,000 in legal fees for Los Angeles-based special counsel Meyers Nave, bringing the firm’s total authorized compensation to $740,000 for work tied to litigation arising from the August 2023 Lahaina wildfires.

Utility work along Piʻilani-Kula Highway in ʻUlupalakua to impact traffic, May 19

Hawaiian Electric using drones as a wildfire safety tool on Maui

As part of its ongoing wildfire safety strategy, Hawaiian Electric will begin this month using unmanned aircrafts, or drones, for aerial inspections of its electrical infrastructure in identified wildfire risk areas throughout Maui. Inspections will continue through June 2026. 

Hawaiian Electric to install acoustic seabird detectors on Maui

Hawaiian Electric will be installing up to 125 acoustic seabird detectors on its poles in various locations across Maui starting Monday, April 20 to Monday, Nov. 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Hawaiian Electric is installing the acoustic detectors to identify possible locations of seabird collisions that occur along power lines, if any, the company reports.
