As of 4:23 p.m., the Mokulele Highway was completely open in both directions. Maui police had closed the Kahului-bound lanes for about three-and-a-half hours while they conducted an investigation into a fatal traffic accident near the Maui Raceway Park on the Mokulele Highway. We will provide details once they become available.

A brush fire that was first reported at 1:50 p.m. today (Friday, August 20, 2010) burned an estimated 4 acres of vacant land.  The fire was located approximately 1/2 mile from the Mokulele Highway in Kahului.   Shortly before 6 p.m., Acting Battalion Chief Sheldon Holokai said the fire is 100% contained and crews were conducting mop-up operations.  Fire [...]

Update 7:15a 6/23/10:  Some smoke still can be seen at the site of yesterday’s fire makai of the Hana Highway in Kahului. There is no threat, there are just some large logs that are smoldering at the center of the already burned area. A motorcyclist involved in a traffic accident last week on the Mokulele Highway died over the weekend at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The man was identified as 21-year-old Thomas J.
