The PGA TOUR will not play The Sentry or the Sony Open in Hawaiʻi in 2027, according to reports today from the PGA. This marks the first time in 56 years that there will be a PGA TOUR tournament absence in the islands, following steady presence since the Sony Open started play at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu in 1971.

Instead of being on air all week to preview The Sentry golf tournament at the Plantation Course, the 76-year-old Rolfing, a longtime Kapalua resident and analyst for NBC Sports and The Golf Channel, was working many hours behind the scenes to help bring the tournament back to Maui. 

Sentry is donating $1 million to three Maui-based nonprofit organizations in recognition of their vital contributions to community well-being, environmental restoration, and the island’s continuing recovery.

TY Management Corporation, owner of Kapalua Golf, reaffirmed its commitment to the Maui community with a $750,000 donation for more than 10 local nonprofit organizations during a celebration event at Hale Makua Health Services in Kahului on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Maui junior golfers enjoyed a chance to play the Kapalua Plantation Golf Course on Sunday, before today’s (Nov. 10, 2025) reopening. The course has been closed since Sept. 2, 2025. Sunday’s event hosted approximately 48 golfers between the ages of 10-17. 

Mark Rolfing has survived stage 4 cancer and is now putting his energy into helping to save the PGA Tour tournament he was instrumental in bringing to Maui 28 years ago.

Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course will reopen for play on Monday, Nov. 10, 2025. The golf course has been closed since Sept. 2, 2025 to allow Kapalua Golf’s agronomy team to restore turf health following prolonged irrigation restrictions. 

The Sony Open in Hawaiʻi at Waiʻalae Country Club on Oʻahu will be the 2026 PGA Tour season opener Jan. 15-18 after the Tour announced today that The Sentry will not be contested in 2026. 

The owner of Kapalua Golf, Tadashi Yanai has pledged $750,000 to various Maui nonprofits, a effort that is aimed at reaffirming the commitment of Kapalua Golf / TY Management to the Maui community.

The Hawaiʻi State Senate is urging PGA officials to find a home for The Sentry in Hawaiʻi after last week’s announcement that the tournament would not hold the event at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in 2026. The decision comes after 27 years on Maui and was attributed to “ongoing drought conditions, water conservation requirements, agronomic conditions and logistical challenges.”

The Maui Chamber of Commerce today released a statement in response to the PGA Tour’s announcement that The Sentry, the season-opening event of the PGA Tour, will not be held at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in 2026. This difficult decision was made due to ongoing drought conditions and severe water conservation requirements impacting the island.

The event had been announced last month as the 2026 PGA Tour season opener to be held Jan. 8-11 at the Plantation Course. The event had an estimated economic impact of $50 million per year on Maui. The tour did not elaborate on the status of the event past 2026, but noted that ongoing drought conditions, water conservation requirements, agronomic conditions and logistical challenges were the main factors in the event not being held this year on Maui.

The Sentry today announced ticket options for the 2026 event when the first Signature Event of the PGA TOUR Regular Season returns to The Plantation Course from Jan. 8-11. 

The Sentry announced today that volunteer registration is now open for the 2026 event. Volunteering offers a variety of opportunities to get involved with the PGA TOUR’s Opening Drive event when it returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua from Jan. 8-11, 2026. 

Tournament officials announced today that The Sentry is contributing a tournament record $747,704 to local nonprofits, continuing to drive impact on Maui as a result of its 2025 event.

In midst of unknowns througout men’s professional golf, Maui’s event has grown stronger

The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua rings in the 2025 Kapalua Concert Series with singer-songwriter Gretchen Rhodes. The event will take place on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, from 6-9 p.m. at Alaloa Lounge where Rhodes will deliver an unplugged evening of blues and rock. Admission is complimentary while dining at Alaloa Lounge, and seating is first-come, first-served.
