Hawaiʻi Island police met with Kamehameha Schools administrators on Hawaiʻi Island, who reported that a former employee of the school embezzled more than $360,000 over a period of approximately three years.

Recent sightings of lasers in and around Kahului and Kapalua Airport were reported and documented in the past week. Pilots landing at the airports have experienced a green laser illuminating their aircraft while on approach to land. Neighborhoods with reported incidents include: Kahului, Kapalua, Kīhei, and Nākālele.

The Maui Police Department today announced the establishment of a dedicated Cold Case Detail with a primary focus on unsolved homicides and missing persons cases.

A 21-year-old Kahului man died of gunshot wounds he reportedly sustained in an altercation reported early Sunday morning in North Kīhei. Medic personnel reported the victim was left at the Medic 3 station on South Kīhei Road by a group of unknown males. A preliminary investigation reveals a group of unknown individuals were congregated north of the Medic 3 location at Uwapo Road when a physical altercation escalated, leading to two gunshots being discharged.

South Kīhei Road is closed from Uwapo Road to Leilani Road. The area north of Uwapo to Kīhei is now open. The area south of Uwapo, remains closed. Police closed the area due to an investigation into a possible shooting. The initial closure went into effect at 4:40 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023.

Maui police arrested a Lahaina resident on Friday for alleged Violation of the Rules and Orders relating to the restricted Lahaina wildfire disaster area.

In unrelated incidents, Deputy Sheriffs arrested two individuals in Honolulu this week on extradition warrants out of other states.

An additional individual has been arrested in connection with an ongoing police investigation into the discovery of a body wrapped in plastic in a remote area of Kula earlier this month.

A Maui man was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle from an elderly visitor in Makawao and driving the vehicle in the wrong direction on the Hāna Highway before crashing.

Police have since confirmed that hunters discovered human remains wrapped in plastic, according to Maui Police Department spokesperson Alana Pico. The investigation remains ongoing. 

Maui police issued an alert, informing the public of a reoccurring fake jewelry scam in which individuals have been approaching people in the parking lots of various business throughout Central Maui.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a burglary that occurred at the Merrie Monarch Festival office on Pi‘ilani Street in Hilo sometime between Sunday morning, June 18, and Monday morning, June 19, 2023. Police say unknown suspect(s) entered the establishment and removed numerous items valued at more than $2,700. One of the items removed was a distinct frame/board that contained 12 Merrie Monarch Royal Court Medals.

Maui Humane Society is asking anyone with information regarding who shot a puppy in Kula with a pellet gun to report it. Information can be shared directly to the organization or callers can remain anonymous by reaching out to Maui Crime Stoppers.

In recent weeks, several people have had callers, claiming to be deputy sheriffs, tell them that they have outstanding warrants because they failed to appear in court.

Dozens of items were confiscated during a raid of the Antique Freak shop in Wailuku, Tuesday. A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged on suspicion of multiple misdemeanors including prohibited wildlife trafficking and possession of endangered and protected wildlife.

*WARNING/GRAPHIC CONTENT: Maui police released body camera images from a deadly shooting reported Sunday on Molokaʻi. Over the course of about three minutes, officers are heard instructing the suspect over 70 times to drop a machete, and 29 times to move back. The man, later identified as 40-year-old Nathaniel Naki, was holding a two foot machete during the confrontation.

One man is dead after a confrontation with officers on Molokaʻi who were responding to a report of a Temporary Restraining Order violation on Sunday morning.
