A new collaboration that aims to significantly accelerate AI model development for mobile, automotive, IoT, and other computing devices was announced today at the Snapdragon Summit on Maui. Dataloop AI, an end-to-end, data-centric AI development platform has entered into the collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., which is focused on computing devices powered by Snapdragon platforms.

The Kahului Public Library will temporarily close to complete extensive interior renovations beginning Friday, Nov. 1. The last day for all library services at the Kahului branch will be Thursday, Oct. 31. At this time, the renovation project is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2025.

Lahaina Cannery will hold its annual Halloween Spooktacular event on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. inside the Cannery. 

A 71-year-old man suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross South Kīhei Road on foot, outside of a marked crosswalk, police said.

Local collection points will be available Oct. 26 for residents to safely dispose of unused or expired medications during the National Take-Back Initiative.

The Hawaiʻi State Federal Credit Union announced its merger with HMSA Employees’ Federal Credit Union following a final member vote on Oct. 15, 2024.

The county’s unemployment rate in September was 4%, compared to the 8.5% rate in September 2023, a month after the Maui wildfire disaster in early August last year. In August of this year, the county’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 4%.

Angel Hands Maui has announced the return of the Lahainaluna High School Prom Pop-Up Shop, an initiative designed to support students affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires. As families in Lahaina continue their journey toward recovery, Angel Hands Maui continues work to ensure that Lahainaluna High School’s juniors and seniors can celebrate their prom in style—without the financial burden that might otherwise prevent them from participating in this milestone event.

The Maui Nui Makai Network today announced a grant award totaling $200,000 that will support the Native Hawaiian community through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Education is seeking community feedback for a new proposed site up to 16 acres from landowner Kamehameha Schools in Ku‘ia, Lahaina, that could serve as the permanent home for rebuilding King Kamehameha III Elementary School, which was damaged in the Aug. 8 wildfires. 

To help people review their benefits and choose appropriate plans during the Medicare Open Enrollment, the nonprofit and State of Hawaiʻi Health Insurance Assistance Program will hold a joint workshop on Maui.

Established in 1984, the Aloha Classic is the longest running windsurfing wave event, and is the final stop on the International Windsurfing Tour. 

The Lahaina Homeowner Recovery Program announced that it will offer no-cost lot surveys for Lahaina homeowners who lived in their home before the Aug. 8, 2023, Maui wildfires. Funding for the lot surveys was provided through a $3-million grant to Hawaiʻi Community Lending from the Maui Strong Fund of the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation. 

Toyota Hawaiʻi will cover admission fees for the first 3,000 attendees at the 2024 Pumpkin Patch at Kula Country Farms on Maui this Sunday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the automotive distributor announced today.

The Alexander Academy Performing Company presents The Nutcracker at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15, 2024 at the Castle Theater. There are three shows: Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Coast Guard members and good Samaritans who responded during the Aug. 8, 2023, Maui wildfires received international recognition and awards during a ceremony at the J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku, Friday.  Altogether, Coast Guard responders and the good Samaritans rescued 20 people and assisted approximately 40 more during the Maui wildfires. 

Update: One lane at mile marker 36 on Honoapiʻilani Highway in the vicinity of Honokōhau Bay has been cleared. A crew from the state Department of Transportation continues to work to clear the rockslide from the other lane.
