The mayor will host a community budget meeting on Tuesday in Kīhei to gather input for the County’s FY26 budget.

Kalani High School’s science and Career and Technical Education teacher Bryan Silver has been honored as the 2025 Hawaiʻi State Teacher of the Year, the state Department of Education announced. Also honored were Maui finalists Jessie O’Neill-Prest of Kīhei Elementary School and Jaime “Kumu Eva” Palakiko of Lahainaluna High School.

Mālama Yo Mama, a community organization on Maui, completed its third annual “Mammo-sas with the Mama” breast cancer benefit event this past weekend, raising funds for the Maui Health Foundation breast cancer screening program.

Three Maui Rotary Clubs captured excellence awards at the District 5000 awards event held recently to recognize the work of service volunteers across the state. Nine of the 52 Rotary clubs in Hawaiʻi are located on the island of Maui.

The County of Maui Department of Housing issued a request for proposals seeking affordable housing projects that will be funded by the Affordable Housing Fund in Fiscal Year 2026. The projects must propose housing solutions that provide housing for families earning 140% and below of the County of Maui’s median family income. 

Hawaiʻi gas prices moved up slightly in most areas over the past week, according to the AAA Hawaiʻi Weekend Gas Watch. The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $4.60, one cent higher than last week and 18 cents lower than a year ago. The national average gas price is $3.19, two cents lower than last week. 

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Statement, in effect from late Thursday night through Sunday morning. Isolated minor coastal flooding is expected around daily peak tides in vulnerable low-lying coastal areas.

The runway at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole has reopened as of 2:25 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024. Passengers should contact their airline to check on the status of their flight.
