Two people were rescued from separate areas of ʻĪao Valley as fast-moving water swept a man downstream and left a child stranded during a Flash Flood at Wailuku River, Sunday.

Coast Guard rescues father, sons after boat capsizes south of Lānaʻi

One man and two children were rescued by Coast Guard personnel after their boat capsized offshore of Lānaʻi Saturday. A helicopter crew located the capsized 16-foot boat about 7 miles south of Mānele Harbor. One man and two boys, ages 8 and 12, were clinging to the hull, not wearing life jackets.

Hawai‘i set to receive more than $9M for forest restoration projects

The Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife will receive $4.9 million for forest restoration work in areas with high values for carbon sequestration and the highest potential to provide habitat for rare species. The project seeks to plant 80,000 native trees and remove invasive weeds from 1,200 acres.

Marine debris removal season at Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument ends with record-breaking results

A team of 16 from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project removed 298,180 pounds of marine debris from the monument during three missions from April to October 2024. The removed marine debris includes 191,860 pounds of derelict fishing nets, 4,600 pounds of abandoned and derelict vessels and 101,720 pounds of plastic and other debris. The team also released four Hawaiian green sea turtles entangled in derelict fishing nets. 

Forum celebrates 25 years of education partnerships between HIDOE and Hawaiʻi’s military community

The 25th annual Joint Venture Education Forum meeting took place Thursday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center on Oʻahu. Military-dependent students, military and civilian volunteers, and representatives from Hawaiʻi’s military branches and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education gathered to celebrate partnerships that support educational opportunities for military-impacted students.
