One of two security checkpoint lanes at Hilo Airport is down. Passengers catching a flight Monday morning, March 13, are advised to arrive two hours prior to a 6:30 a.m. flight, and  three hours prior to any other flights during the day.

Pause in eruptive activity continues at Kīlauea despite earthquake swarm

“Resumption of eruptive activity at Kīlauea summit no longer appears to be imminent, although it is possible that another intrusion or resumption may occur in the near future with little or no warning,” according to an update from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. 

List: Maui lane closures through March 17

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice.  All projects are weather permitting.

Bicyclist suffers critical life-threatening injuries in Honoapiʻilani crash on Maui

A 67-year-old Kīhei man suffered critical, life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while bicycling along the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Saturday afternoon. Police say a preliminary investigation reveals the bicyclist was traveling westbound on the shoulder, made a left into the roadway where he was struck by a black 2020 Nissan Maxima sedan, which was traveling westbound.

Honoring Queen Kaʻahumanu Center’s namesake with protocol and music, March 17

Shallow earthquake swarm detected beneath Kīlauea summit

A shallow earthquake swarm has been detected beneath the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, accompanied by significant surface tilt excursion, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. HVO scientists say resumption of eruptive activity at Kīlauea summit is likely imminent.

UPDATE/OPEN: Honoapiʻilani Highway traffic accident at Mile 8.5

UPDATES: (5:09 p.m., March 11, 2023). The Honoapiʻilani Highway is now open in both directions. It will take some time before traffic resumes its normal flow. The highway was closed for several hours since around 1:30 p.m. following a motor vehicle accident near Mile 8.5.
