De Fries is the First Native Hawaiian Appointed as CEO of Hawai‘i Tourism Authority

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority today announced the selection of John De Fries as its new President and CEO.  He replaces Chris Tatum who retired from the post on Aug. 31, 2020. Keith Regan, (formerly of Maui) HTA’s chief administrative officer, has been serving as interim president and CEO.

$27 Million In New Federal Funding Secured for Native Hawaiian Education

Hawai‘i will receive $26,992,923 in new federal funding to support grants under the Native Hawaiian Education Program. The funding was awarded to 23 Native Hawaiian educational programs across the state.

Members of the Hawai‘i State Senate Special Committee on COVID-19 sent a letter to Governor David Ige calling for neighbor island counties to serve as Pilot Program testing sites for exclusive travel between neighbor island counties.  

Roselani Place COVID-19 Cases Rise to 47 Total Since Aug. 15

The number of COVID-19 positive cases at the Roselani Place assisted living community is now 47–including 28 staff and 19 residents. The case count increased from 27 on Aug. 27 to 47 on Sept. 7, following routine testing.

There were 66 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today including 58 on O‘ahu, two on Maui and six on Hawai‘i Island. Hawai‘i’s COVID-19 death toll also rises to 88 with the passing of two more residents– one on the island of O‘ahu and one on Maui.

Overturned Vehicle: Mid-Day Accident Slows Traffic on Honoapi‘ilani Highway

Emergency crews are on the scene of a motor vehicle accident on the Honoapiʻilani Highway.  Witnesses say a car flipped on the “Pali” section of Honoapiʻilani Highway on Kahului side of the tunnel. Traffic remained open in both directions, but motorists experienced delays while the accident was cleared.

UPDATE: 450 Customers Have Power Restored in Pā‘ia, After Four Power Poles Are Downed

Based on early assessments, it appears one pole came down along Baldwin Avenue between Pāʻia Mill Road and Kona Road and snagged power lines that brought down three other poles.
