Traffic fatality: Pedestrian dies, struck by vehicle on Honoapiʻilani Highway in Olowalu
A 42-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle while she was crossing the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Olowalu Monday night. The incident was reported at around 7:40 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023, on the Honoapiʻilani Highway (30) in the area of Mile 13.9.
Bill seeks a carrying capacity study for Mākena State Park due to increased visitors
Because of the increase of visitors, “amenities offered at the park are being stretched and park upkeep and maintenance are being tested,” according to the bill’s language. The hearing on SB 1136, SD1, HD1 is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Founder describes early days of Hawaiian language immersion program, challenges
In 1986, Kīʻope Raymond was asked to join the board of the ʻAha Pūnana Leo to found the first private, nonprofit pre-school in Hawaiian language on Maui. There are now three ‘Aha Pūnana Leo schools on Maui and pathways enabling Hawaiian immersion language students to receive instruction and graduate from Lahainaluna, Hāna, and King Kekaulike high schools. Maui Police Department mourns passing of former Chief Howard Tagomori
The Maui Police Department confirmed the passing of former Chief Howard Tagomori on March 3, 2023. He served 35 years in county law enforcement, including a decade as chief from 1988 to 1998.
Visitors to Maui in February up 14% from last year, spending up 34%
Tourism continued to recover across the state in February, with Maui County reporting double digit increases in visitors and spending over the same time last year.

33 swimmers accused of “aggressively pursuing” a dolphin pod on Hawaiʻi Island
A group of 33 swimmers were met by uniformed officers after they were caught on drone video and in photographs allegedly harassing a pod of dolphins at Hōnaunau Bay Sunday morning off Hawaiʻi Island.
Phase 1 excavation complete at Haleakalā following 700 gallon fuel spill
Workers removed approximately 43 sacks of soil estimated at 84,000 pounds, replacing it with soil gathered at a nearby site. The soil removed is being safely stored at the summit of Haleakalā until a remediation plan is approved in Phase 3.
Volcano Watch: Pele’s hair – a beautiful hazard on Hawaiʻi Island
Shiny and elusive, featherlight and golden-brown. If poets were to write about rocks, I’m sure they would sing their praises of Pele’s hair. Don’t be fooled, though, because Pele’s hairs are strands of volcanic glass, and they can pose a serious hazard.

Haleakalā NP to move forward with plan to use mosquitoes to reduce the transmission of avian malaria in forest birds
The NPS will use an incompatible insect technique (IIT) which consists of repeatedly releasing incompatible male mosquitoes into the wild to reduce the reproductive potential of female mosquitoes in the project area.
Gov. Green announces Kūlanihāko‘i High opening agreement
The State and Maui County have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement in which the Department of Education will receive a temporary certificate of occupancy in exchange for the State temporarily agreeing to indemnify the County against theoretical future claims of liability.
Polynesian Voyaging Society launches a four-year Moananuiākea Voyage
The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced that it will launch a planned circumnavigation of the Pacific upon arrival in Juneau, Alaska on June 10, 2023. PVS spent five years planning for the Moananuiākea Voyage, which will take four years to complete.
Mayor Richard Bissen, Jr. identifies priorities in his first State of the County Address
In his address, Mayor Bissen described work by his administration in priority areas of housing, water, infrastructure, economic development, and environment. He also discussed work to find a resolution surrounding the opening of the long-awaited Kūlanihākoʻi High School in South Maui.
