Bishop Museum Awarded $50,000 for ‘Extending Our Reach’ Project
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs awarded the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum with a $49,999 grant for its “Extending Our Reach” project, which provides educational programs and meaningful experiences to a high percentage of Native Hawaiian students on neighboring islands.

Hawaiian Soul, a narrative short-film based on the true story of Hawaiian hero, musician, and activist, George Jarrett Helm, Jr., is coming to Maui with a free community screening in Mākena on Monday July 19, 2021 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mākena Beach & Golf Resort’s oceanfront lawn adjacent to Maluaka Beach.
Kolohe Kai In-Person MACC Concert Features Pod Seating
The concert is among one of the first live events returning to the Amphitheater lawn and seats will be arranged in socially distanced pods containing either two or four seats. Patrons will need to purchase a full pod to ensure that those seated together are members of their own ‘ohana. There are no single ticket purchases for this event.

The Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center reopens to the public tomorrow, Wednesday, July 7 with the exhibit Abstraction x3, running from July 7 to September 4 with new gallery hours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.
2021 Merrie Monarch Results; Maui Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi Named No. 2 Overall
Maui’s Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi under the direction or Nā Kumu Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes earned a second place overall finish. The hālau from Wailuku, Maui also captured awards for: first place in the Wahine Overall, second place in Kāne Overall, first place in Wahine ‘Auana, third place in Wahine Kahiko, and second place in the Kāne ʻAuana divisions.

Live Theatre Returns to ProArts Playhouse in Kīhei with Damien Starring Vinnie Linares
ProArts and Oh Boy Productions present the 20th Anniversary Production of Damien, the playhouse’s first theatrical show in 16 months. The production, written by Aldyth Morris and starring Vinnie Linares, will have six performances: July 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm, and matinees July 18 and 25 at 3 pm at the playhouse in Azeka Center in Kīhei.
New Zealand Indigenous Drama “Cousins” to Debut Theatrically in Hawai’i, July 2
Cousins, directed by Award-winning Māori filmmaking duo Ainsley Gardiner and Briar Grace-Smith, had its worldwide premiere at the Māoriland Film Festival in New Zealand where it won the 2021 People’s Choice for Best Feature Drama. The film debuted at number one at New Zealand’s box office when it was released earlier this year.
