Gift bags from the 47th Annual Maui County Senior Fair will be distributed on various days and locations Countywide.

There were 131 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today, including 67 on the island of O‘ahu, 34 on Hawai‘i Island and 29 new cases in Maui County.  The Maui cases include one new case in Wailuku and 28 new cases on Lāna‘i, bringing the cluster count for Lāna‘i to 48 cases since Tuesday.  

A report of suspected human remains was documented today at a West Maui construction site where trenching work is taking place for waterline installation.

In its transition to use more renewable energy to power Maui while maintaining reliable service, Hawaiian Electric submitted an application to build a new switchyard and make equipment conversions to retire its oil-firing generating units at the Kahului Power Plant.

In September 2020, Hawai‘i hotels continued to report substantial declines in revenue per available room, average daily rate and occupancy compared to September 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Statewide RevPAR decreased to $29 (-85.0%), ADR fell to $149 (-39.5%) and occupancy declined to 19.6 percent (-59.4 percentage points) in September.

Maui police responded to seven burglaries, three vehicle thefts and nine vehicle break-ins in Maui County over a seven day period from Oct. 11 to Oct. 17, 2020.

“Today, I am encouraging all Lānaʻi residents to shelter-in-place.  This is not a mandate, but a request to help stop the spread.   Please don’t go out unless you absolutely need to and take advantage of any delivery and curbside pick-up options that are available to you and your ʻohana,” said Rep. Lynn DeCoite.

Although a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration is not expected to be widely available until early next year, state and county officials and private-sector partners have already prepared a preliminary plan to implement a COVID-19 vaccination program in the state.

There were 102 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today, including 52 on the island of O‘ahu, 29 on Hawai‘i Island and 18 new cases in Maui County.  The Maui cases include 16 new cases on Lāna‘i for a total of 20 active cases there, and one each in Wailuku and Lahaina. Makawao/Pukalani (96768) drops to zero active cases.

The Lahaina Plantation Museum reopens to the public today, Oct. 22 on the upper level of The Wharf, across the iconic Banyan Tree in Lahaina. The new museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday. The museum will be closed on the weekends and major holidays.

The County is coordinating drive-through Halloween events that will be held at the Outlets of Maui in West Maui and Keōpūolani Park in Central Maui.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino issued a reminder to the public that the County of Maui is providing a free, voluntary post-arrival testing program for returning residents and visitors traveling into Maui County. Election Day is less than two weeks away. And, for the first time in a general election, Hawaiʻi is using all-mail balloting. In Maui County, County Clerk Kathy Kaohu said voting is going “smoothly” so far with 27,350 of the 96,882 active registered voters (28.23 percent) already casting their ballots.

The final Community Budget Meeting for Fiscal Year 2022, hosted by Mayor Michael Victorino and his administration, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Mayor Michael Victorino announced Wednesday the launch of a $1 million Small Business Mortgage & Relief direct payment program to provide a lifeline for businesses struggling to survive COVID-19 impacts.

Dr. Lee Weiss, Regional Director of Emergency Medical Services with Maui Health warned that swift action needs to be taken. He said the cases identified so far, are “the tip of the iceberg,” and estimated that 10 percent of the Lāna‘i population could be positive within a week.  He called for mass testing as well as a shut down of the island to travel, calling its border “porous.” 

The number of COVID-19 cases on the island of Lāna‘i has jumped to 16, with confirmation this afternoon of 12 additional cases as of 4 p.m.  Currently all cases are residents.  None are hospitalized.  All are isolating at home.

There were 78 new COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i today, including 65 on the island of O‘ahu, nine on Hawai‘i Island and four new cases in Maui County.  The four Maui cases were on the rural island of Lāna‘i, and were reported yesterday, but were not included in yesterday’s count because the confirmation came after the state released it’s official count at noon on Tuesday.

Popular West Maui eatery, Star Noodle will reopen in early November at the spot previously occupied by its sister restaurant, Aloha Mixed Plate. Now with enhanced safety measures and distancing requirements, restaurant managers say the new ocean-front space at 1285 Front Street, will provide the open-air and increased capacity they need.

The State of Hawai‘i has added Diagnostic Laboratory Services to the list of eight other trusted testing partners for inter-county travel to Kauaʻi and Maui counties.
