New data: Growing numbers of Hawaiʻi students not up to date with immunizations
More Hawaiʻi students are failing to stay up to date with their immunizations, according to new data from the Hawaiʻi Department of Health, which calls it a “concerning development.”
Severe weather on Maui results in park, road closures
The Department of Public Works said Okolani Drive and South Kīhei Road from Wailea Alanui Drive to Kilohana in South Maui remain closed as of noon today due to storm impacts. Also, trees are blocking both lanes on Naʻalae and Waipoli roads Upcountry, and crews are working to clear the roads. Parks facilities that closed include: Central Maui Regional Sports Complex; Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool; Keawakapu Beach parking lot; Kīhei Aquatic Center; and Kīhei Community Center.
Maui wildfire survivors have until Jan. 15 to complete Interim Housing applications
The Office of Resiliency and Recovery today announced that the deadline to complete applications for the Hawaiʻi Interim Housing Program (HIHP) for Maui residents displaced by the August 2023 Wildfires is Jan. 15, 2025. Households that have existing applications have until Jan. 15 to complete any remaining information for HIHP processing.
HVO: Kīlauea summit is slowly inflating; another fountaining episode may occur
The eruption that began within Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit of Kīlauea volcano on Dec. 23, 2024, remains paused. Monitoring data show that Kīlauea summit is slowly inflating, indicating that new magma is accumulating below the surface of the summit region. It is not possible to forecast an exact outcome of this activity but we are in a window where it is likely another fountaining episode may occur, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

HIDOE closes multiple schools on Maui today due to power outages, unsafe roads
Public schools in Hāna, Lahaina and Kihei will be closed to students and staff today, Friday, Jan. 10, due to power outages and unsafe road conditions caused by weather impacts. This includes: Hāna High & Elementary; Kamali‘i Elementary ; Kīhei Elementary; Lokelani Intermediate; Kūlanihāko‘i High; King Kamehameha III Elementary; Princess Nāhi‘ena‘ena Elementary; Lahaina Intermediate; and Lahainaluna High.
Update: Power restored to most Maui customers after 22,000 lose electricity during storm
Hawaiian Electric crews are working to restore power to approximately 100 remaining Maui customers in pockets of Kailua, Kīhei and Kula. As of 8:30 p.m., power was restored to all others including 22,000 customers in parts of South Maui, Upcountry, West Maui and Central Maui after early morning thunderstorms.
