Cold front to move down islands Monday through Wednesday
A cold front will move down the island chain Monday through Wednesday bringing breezy southwesterly winds and rain, according to the latest forecast issued by the National Weather Service. The NWS is forecasting a second cold front will sweep through the islands from Thursday night and Friday with another round of rain and trade winds “becoming strong behind.”
Increase in showers for Maui and the Big Island; Maui Flood Advisory until 10 p.m.
The National Weather Service has extended the Maui Flood Advisory until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. At 7:06 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over East Maui, with the heaviest rain falling along the southern slopes of Haleakalā. Rain was falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1 inches per hour.
High Wind Warning issued for Haleakalā on Maui and Big Island summits
On the Big Island summits, southwest winds of 50 to 70 mph will increase to 60 to 80 mph Tuesday. On the high summit of Haleakalā on Maui, southwest winds will build to 45 to 55 mph tonight and increase to 50 to 60 mph Tuesday.

Another cold front approaches the islands from the northwest, bringing up another round of unstable showers starting tonight and lasting through Wednesday.
Cold front brings gusty winds and bouts of rainfall
A front rapidly approaching Kauaʻi from the northwest will move down the island chain today and tonight, delivering gusty west to northwest winds, brief bouts of heavy rainfall, and cool conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency reports that the Tornado Warning that was in effect for Molokaʻi through 7:45 p.m. has since been canceled, but the public is advised to be aware of changing weather conditions this evening.

Strong northeast winds are expected to develop after a cold front passes, potentially resulting in a period of very windy conditions. Additionally, a powerful low pressure system passing north of the area will generate a large north swell that will build Wednesday night, with the peak of the swell potentially coinciding with extreme high tides Thursday and Friday mornings.
