First Hawaiian Bank today announced that employees and retirees have made a major impact this holiday season by contributing a donation of $886,449 to 36 charities in Hawai‘i, Guam, and Saipan as part of its annual Kōkua Mai employee giving campaign.

TY Management Corporation, owner of Kapalua Golf, reaffirmed its commitment to the Maui community with a $750,000 donation for more than 10 local nonprofit organizations during a celebration event at Hale Makua Health Services in Kahului on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The Maui Chamber of Commerce today released a statement in response to the PGA Tour’s announcement that The Sentry, the season-opening event of the PGA Tour, will not be held at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in 2026. This difficult decision was made due to ongoing drought conditions and severe water conservation requirements impacting the island.

First Hawaiian Bank today announced that bank employees and retirees have ushered in this year’s holiday giving season by contributing a donation of $873,987.53 to 36 charities in Hawai‘i, Guam, and Saipan as part of the bank’s annual Kōkua Mai employee giving campaign.

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association celebrated its 45th year of giving back to the community with the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Saturday. Nearly 1,600 walkers attended the in-person event at the War Memorial Complex. Walkers finished 2.5 miles of exercise and received complimentary breakfast, treats, giveaway prizes, and local entertainment, including a performance by Tihati Productions. An impressive total of $1,235,482 was raised so far from Maui County. 

Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi announced the selection of its new president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaiʻi, Edmund “Ed” Chan. Chan’s roots in Hawaiʻi began early in his career. In 2000, after completing his Registered Dietitian training in Boston, he accepted a position as a clinical dietitian for Hale Makua Health Services in Kahului, Maui. Chan also took on roles at the Community Clinic of Maui and served as a consultant dietitian to Maui Youth & Family Services.

Hale Makua Health Services announced the establishment of an Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to help those affected by emergencies or disasters like the Maui wildfires last month.

Maui County Council Member Tasha Kama and Edwina Wilson-Snyder, former Maui educator and president of the umbrella council for kupuna clubs countywide, were honored as Kupuna Advocates of the Year at the event.

The program, which is designed to provide students with hands-on experience and knowledge about various industries in the county, covered areas such as sustainable science, conservation and agriculture, economic and workforce development, Maui governance, healthcare, and construction and technology.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions raised a record $694,705 for charity in 2023. It’s the largest charitable impact figure raised for the local community since the event moved to Maui in 1999.

“To see her come full circle and her now at Hale Makua and to be able to go swimming again, it’s just so heartwarming,” said Teresa Lopes, Kahului Activities Director at Hale Makua.

Maui earmarks include $23 million for the realignment of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, $6.1 million to Haleakalā National Park, and a host of other federal funds for various projects and improvements.

The US Senate passed the FY22 appropriations bill which includes $263 million in congressionally directed spending for Hawaiʻi.

The Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk distributed $1.203 million in funds to 60 local nonprofit organizations in a ceremony at the Maui Beach Hotel on Monday morning. The funds were generated through the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk which was held in a virtual format for the first time this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
