Hawaiian Electric to begin construction of first standalone load-shifting battery energy storage system on Maui

As part of its transition to using more renewable energy and cutting carbon emissions to power Maui, Hawaiian Electric will begin construction in January of the island’s first large standalone load-shifting battery energy storage system (BESS). The Waena BESS will enable the planned retirement of four generating units at the company’s Kahului Power Plant.

Hawai‘i Energy program secures 3-year, $127M contract to continue conservation work

Leidos, the state’s Hawai‘i Energy program administrator, has been awarded a new three-year contract by the Public Utilities Commission to continue managing Hawai‘i’s energy conservation efforts, according to an announcement on Thursday.

Hawaiian Electric to install bird diverters using drones on Maui

Hawaiian Electric will be installing power line markers also known as bird diverters on its electrical infrastructure using unmanned aircrafts, or drones, in parts of Kahakuloa, Honomanū, and Keālia National Wildlife Refuge areas from Dec. 1 to Dec. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and weather permitting. Electric service will not be impacted.

Hawaiian Electric has re-energized all circuits impacted in the south Kohala area of Hawai‘i Island by the Public Safety Power Shutoff program. At this time, all customers who can have power restored safely should now have electricity.
