A powerful kona storm is producing periods of hazardous weather impacts across the Hawaiian Islands through the weekend. Threats range from significant flash flooding, damaging winds, strong to severe thunderstorms, and snow and ice over the highest Big Island summits. Maui is under a High Wind Warning through Sunday morning and a Flood Watch through Saturday afternoon.

Beginning after sunset Thursday, March 12, 2026, Haleakalā National Park will be closed due to dangerous weather conditions. The closure will go into effect for both the Summit District and Kīpahulu District.

On the Big Island summits, southwest winds of 50 to 70 mph will increase to 60 to 80 mph Tuesday. On the high summit of Haleakalā on Maui, southwest winds will build to 45 to 55 mph tonight and increase to 50 to 60 mph Tuesday.

A front rapidly approaching Kauaʻi from the northwest will move down the island chain today and tonight, delivering gusty west to northwest winds, brief bouts of heavy rainfall, and cool conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service is forecasting east to northeast winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph through 6 p.m. In Maui County, the highest peak winds so far have been gusts of 46 mph recorded early this morning: at Kāneloa, south of Mākena; and at Makapulapai near Kalaupapa on Molokaʻi.
