The 2024 hurricane season featured two tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific Hurricane Center area of responsibility. Four to five tropical cyclones occur during an average year. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The central Pacific basin extends from 140°W to the International Date Line.

Hone has weakened from hurricane status to a tropical storm as the center passed about 175 miles south of Kauaʻi. On the forecast track, Hone will continue moving away from the main Hawaiian Islands, and pass well north of Johnston Island Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has upgraded Hone to the status of a Category 1 Hurricane, with maximum sustained winds now at 75 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles, according to the CPHC. The system was last located about 105 miles south of Hilo, Hawaiʻi, 115 miles SSE of Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi; 55 miles SSE of South Point, Hawaiʻi; 180 miles SSE of Hāna, Maui; 200 miles SSE of Kahului, Maui; 230 miles SSE of Kaunakakai, Molokaʻi; 210 miles SSE of Lānaʻi City, Lānaʻi; 275 miles SE of Honolulu, Oʻahu; 370 miles SE of Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi; and 405 miles SE of Niʻihau.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center is monitoring Tropical Storm Hone, located far east-southeast of the state, and currently tracking westward. “While it is too early to determine the exact impacts, a transition to a wet and windy period is likely over the weekend through early next week as this tropical storm approaches and moves into the area,” according to the National Weather Service.

The 2024 central Pacific hurricane season outlook from forecasters at NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, calls for 1–4 tropical cyclones across the central Pacific Hurricane region. A near-normal season has 4 or 5 tropical cyclones, which include tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Calvin is now a tropical storm with sustained winds of 70 mph as it continues on a WNW path at 16 mph. Calvin was last located 1360 miles ESE of Hilo, 1425 miles ESE of Hāna and 1460 miles ESE of Kahului, Maui.

Windy conditions and some wet weather could potentially develop around the middle of next week as Tropical Storm Calvin nears the islands from the east, according to the National Weather Service.

Hawaiian Electric crews on Maui have been working to bolster the island’s resilience against severe weather-related events through a series of ongoing initiatives.

Tropical Storm Frank is expected to become a hurricane in the next few hours, but “both storms are still well to the east and do not post any threat to Hawaiʻi in the next several days,” according to HI-EMA.

Darby has weakened overnight from a hurricane to a tropical storm, and sits well east of Hawaiʻi. The forecast track will bring the center of Darby, or its remnant low, south of the Big Island on Saturday.

The prototype, dubbed the “Wiki Hale” by the UH School of Architecture students who created it, could eventually be assembled in linked clusters to form communities with shared kitchen spaces and to house residents for weeks or months during recovery from a major disaster.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu has predicted 2-to-4 tropical storms for the season, which starts June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

Felicia is forecast to move into the Central Pacific Hurricane Center area of responsibility Tuesday night as a tropical storm, according to forecasters.

According to the NHC, Felicia “rapidly intensified over the past day or so, and additional strengthening is expected through early Friday,” and slow weakening is possible by this weekend.

The 2021 Central Pacific hurricane season starts today and Hawaiian Electric is advising customers, both residential and commercial, to be prepared and have emergency plans in place.

It only takes one storm to cause significant loss of life and damage to property and the environment. The HI-EMA encourages residents to prepare now for a storm that could occur at any time.

Hawai‘i Gas, the state’s only gas utility, reminds residents to plan early and prepare now in order to ensure safety and resiliency during a storm or severe weather event.

With hurricane season fast approaching, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and its National Flood Insurance Program advise Hawai‘i residents to prepare now for hurricane-related storms and flooding.

The Hurricane Warning that was in effect for Kauai County, has since been lifted (as of 2:25 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020) as Douglas moves rapidly away from Kauai.  The system is now 60 miles NNW of Lihue with 90 mph maximum sustained winds. It had picked up strength during a midnight advisory. The tropical cyclone continues on a path WNW at 16 mph.
