Highway overpass for Kūlanihāko’i High School at least 2 years from completion

Plans were unveiled for an overpass across Piʻilani Highway at the entrance to the newly opened Kūlanihākoʻi High School, but it will not be completed for two years at the earliest — and thatʻs only if funding is secured.

A federal grant of $25,000,000 has been secured for the Līloa Drive extension in Kīhei on Maui as part of Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America Agenda. The project will extend Līloa Drive by 2,900 lineal feet and notes the addition of two more roundabouts to the South Maui community.

Sen. McKelvey calls for audit of DOE for roundabout construction and delayed opening of Kūlanihākoʻi High School

“The fact that they would ask for funding to cover the plan and design for the grade-separated crossing instead of funding the entire project will set us back another five years,” said Sen. McKelvey.  “This is unconscionable, considering this school has been in the works for the past ten years. It is a travesty that this money was taken from our children and used to fund a DOT project when they have their own budget,” he said.

Kῑhei Roundabout to partially open Feb. 10, full completion slated for Feb. 24

On Friday, Feb. 10 when work concludes at 3:30 p.m., the contractor will open all lanes through the roundabout. There will be two lanes open in each direction through the roundabout. The right turn lane in and out of Kūlanihākoʻi Street will be closed during daytime work hours from 7 a.m to 3:30 p.m. and re-open at close of business each day.

Nightly closure of Piʻilani between Kaonoulu and Piʻikea, Feb. 6-8 for roundabout paving

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will close Piʻilani Highway nightly in both directions between Kaonoulu Street and Piʻikea Avenue from 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, through 5 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Traffic still slow at Kīhei roundabout amid construction; completion set for January

After roadwork this week, there are now two lanes open in the southbound (Mākena bound) direction and one lane open in the northbound (Kahului bound) direction. Traffic was slow midday today when approaching the roundabout in the single northbound lane.

Happening Tonight: Another night closure of Piʻilani Highway starts at 10 p.m., Dec. 21

The state Department of Transportation will conduct another full nighttime closure of the Piʻilani Highway–this time between Kaonoulu Street and Piʻikea Avenue–from 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, through 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022. The closure is being done so that workers can complete the permanent striping of the northbound lanes in the Kīhei Roundabout work zone.
