A Model for Maui: Regenerative “Green Streets” blessed at Honoiki and Keoneʻōʻio 

A blessing was held last week for the new “Green Streets” project in Mākena, a transformative milestone in sustainable, low-impact development on Maui, according to managers. The public right-of-way project diagonally across from Mākena Landing at the intersection of Honoiki Street and Keone‘ō‘io Road, is a collaboration between Mākena Golf and Beach Club and the County of Maui.

Kanaloa Kahoʻolawe fundraising farm dinner at Mākena Golf & Beach Club 

Mākena Golf & Beach Club will host I Ola Kanaloa, a fundraising dinner event honoring local organizations Protect Kahoʻolawe ‘Ohana and Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission for their work towards supporting Kahoʻolawe.  All proceeds from the event will benefit the honorees.  The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mākena Golf & Beach Club’s Nāulu Farm.

Two visitors from Washington state pulled unresponsive from ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu in South Maui

Two visitors were pulled unresponsive from waters on the north side of the ʻĀhihi-Kinaʻu Natural Area Reserve in South Maui on Saturday afternoon. Emergency responders were called to a report of swimmers/snorkelers in distress about 100-150 yards offshore at around 12:02 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2024. Authorities have since identified the victims as a 26-year-old woman and 25-year-old man, both residents of Washington state.

Comment period for Mākena Mauka EIS Preparation Notice is extended 30 days

The Mākena Mauka land plan covers approximately 1,041 acres and proposes 850 to 900 new homes in an area long identified for residential/resort residential uses but that is currently largely vacant.

Portions of Mākena State Park to be closed intermittently for hazardous tree work

Over the next two weeks, work will take place to remove large fallen trees and hazardous branches from Mākena State Park in South Maui. Due to the large equipment that will be used for this project, the DLNR Division of State Parks will close off sections of the park.

Project for 53 luxury homes in Mākena clears hurdle after mixed testimony

After testifiers debated whether adding 53 luxury homes in a hotel area would help or hurt Maui’s housing crisis, Maui Planning Commission cleared a key hurdle today for the project planned on 28 acres in Mākena. Public testifiers said the project will help keep wealthy, out-of-state homebuyers in hotel areas and reduce demand on residential communities. Other residents voiced strong opposition, saying that affordable homes – not luxury homes – should be prioritized.   

UPDATE: Search Continues for Missing Snorkeler in Mākena

Fire, Ocean Safety, and USCG personnel continued searching for the snorkeler first reported missing on Tuesday afternoon. As of 3 p.m. today, there are no new developments.

Vandals Cut Fence at Puʻu Ōlaʻi “Little Beach” in Mākena

Authorities are searching for the vandal(s) who cut through metal gate poles and fencing at the “entrance” to Pu‘u Ola‘i “Little Beach” at Mākena State Park on Maui. The beach section was closed on Jan. 5 in an effort to stop Sunday evening large gatherings (drum circles) attended by hundreds of people.

Maui State Park Updates: Mākena Open but Parking Closed, Waiʻānapanapa and ‘Īao Remain CLOSED

Passive beach use is now allowed at all State Parks beaches, although some gates will remain locked for resource management, people’s safety and due to fiscal constraints. COVID-19 rules and social distancing guidelines remain applicable, following each county’s emergency orders.

Part of Mākena State Park and Polipoli Springs Open for Hiking and Exercise, But Not Gatherings

On Maui, state parks that are reopened for exercise and hiking only during restricted hours are: Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area and Mākena State Park (except Puʻu o Laʻi aka “Little Beach”). Areas on Maui that remain completely closed include: Puʻu o Laʻi “Little Beach” section of Mākena State Park; Halekiʻi-Pihana and ʻĪao Valley State Monuments; and Kaumahina, Wailua and Puaʻakaʻa Wayside Parks.
