The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation welcomed a new class of 18 adult corrections officers during a graduation ceremony on Friday. The new corrections officers completed training and will begin their careers in facilities across the state, including three at the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku.

The bill includes the addition of 3 permanent positions and $98,500 in FY24 and $200,250 in FY25 for Maui College’s health center. House Bill 300, House Draft 1, Senate Draft 1 now moves back to the House for further consideration.  

Fourteen recruits with the graduating class have completed basic training and will begin their careers as correctional officers in facilities across the state. 

The state Department of Public Safety held a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday to mark the start of construction of a new medium security housing structure for female inmates at the Maui Community Correctional Center.

Inmates in PSD custody during the period of March 3, 2021 through Dec. 31, 2024, who become fully vaccinated against COVID-19, are eligible to receive a one-time incentive award of $50.

An additional 24 inmates at the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku tested positive for COVID-19 today, bringing the number of active infections to 84 among inmates and staff. The breakdown includes 17 staff and 67 active inmate infections at the Maui jail.

It’s the first new case at the facility since last Monday, April 12, when officials said the facility was clear of cases.

A small protest was held outside of the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku on Friday, seeking protections for inmates from COVID-19 where an outbreak of the virus was first reported four weeks ago.

At about 2 p.m. Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC) inmates in one module refused to go back into their cells.  Staff immediately activated their emergency response teams to deescalate the situation.  It was quickly contained and order restored by 2:45 p.m.   Maui Police were called to standby for assistance as a precaution.

Dry Fog Sanitation is being used to sanitize the Maui Community Correctional Center and other jail facilities across the state in an ongoing effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  

Eight months after a riot that caused an estimated $5.3 million in damage, overcrowding remains an issue at the Maui Community Correctional Center.

Sheriffs on Maui are searching for pre-trial felon Richard Kealoha-Kaauwai. Kealoha-Kaauwai was issued a court ordered temporary, 3-day release to attend to a personal matter.

The new, temporary, visiting hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday visits will follow the same schedule.

Todayʻs morning visitation at the Maui Community Correctional Center, which includes 9:15 a.m. and noon, have been canceled. 

An informational briefing will be held to hear from the Department of Public Safety and receive an update on the emergency appropriation for Maui Community Correctional Center and the current state of the facility.
