A new study released in Conservation Biology Wednesday and co-authored by scientists at Ocean Conservancy, Arizona State University and Shaw Institute is the first to rank marine mammals based on their vulnerability to plastic larger than roughly the size of a pencil eraser.

In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Pilikahakai Foundation and partners invite the community to take part in a weekend of events dedicated to protecting Maui’s coral reefs and ʻāina.

This Sunday, Pilikahakai Foundation’s Cultures and Coastlines Speaker Series presents a hana hou (encore) event at Maui Ocean Center’s Sphere – Using Coral Genetics to Empower Local Stewardship of Maui Reefs. The community is invited to a free, family friendly event exploring how science and culture can work together to protect Hawai‘i’s reefs.

The 21st Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup, held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s “International Coastal Cleanup” and Mālama Maui Nui’s “Get the Drift and Bag It!” campaign, invites both residents and visitors to join this global movement to remove litter and debris from coastal environments.

The 20th Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup takes place on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup and Mālama Maui Nui’s “Get the Drift and Bag It!” campaign.

The Lahaina Town Cleanup returns for its 20th year on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cleanup is an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to join in a global effort to remove litter and debris from the coast.

Today, Ocean Conservancy scientists have released a new analysis that shows a correlation between an increase in statewide plastic grocery bag bans and a decrease in plastic grocery bags found on beaches and waterways by Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup volunteers. Maui and Kauai County implemented plastic bag bans in 2011, followed by Hawai’i and Honolulu Counties.

Ocean Conservancy is calling for volunteers worldwide to join the 39th annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the world’s largest beach and waterway cleanup effort, launching on Sept. 21, 2024. With plastic pollution at crisis levels, ICC organizers invite everyone who loves the ocean to take action by joining a cleanup in their area.

“This year we invite you to do a cleanup in an area that is safe and accessible to you – wherever you are in the world,” encourages Tambara Garrick, LahainaTown Action Committee Board Member, “Lahaina Town is currently closed but that doesn’t mean you can’t make an impact for the environment.”

The nonprofit Mālama Maui Nui is launching “Get the Drift and Bag It!” — an annual cleanup campaign hosted in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy that seeks to empower Maui residents in their environmental stewardship of the island community. This year’s event will take place Sept. 1-18.

Volunteers with the 16th Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup collected a 1-ton trailer worth of debris much of which was from abandoned campsites along the West Maui shoreline.  

Mālama Maui Nui is hosting their annual “Get the Drift and Bag It!” cleanup campaign from Sept. 19 to Oct. 3 in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy. The cleanup campaign aims to empower and mobilize Maui residents in their environmental stewardship of the island community.

Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Hawaiʻi Mermaid Adventures are seeking volunteers to join them in their beach cleanup on Sept. 15. at Poʻolenalena Beach Park in Kīhei from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The cleanup is a part of the larger International Coastal Cleanup Day, which the Ocean Conservancy has hosted for the past 30 years.
