Visitor injured during landslide in remote section of Piʻilani Highway

A 66-year-old woman from Canada was injured when a rock from a landslide struck the vehicle she was in, on a remote section of the Piʻilani Highway Sunday morning. A rock from the landslide penetrated the roof of the vehicle and struck the woman, who was in the rear seat.

A 35-year-old suspect is being held on $500,000 bail following a harrowing incident reported by a California couple who told police they were carjacked on a remote section of the Piʻilani Highway, and fled for their lives on foot to the summit of Haleakalā.

Kaupō structure fire results in $106,000 in damage

Maui firefighters responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning in the Kaupō area of East Maui. Damages were estimated $6,000 to the structures and $100,000 in damage to the contents. No one was displaced and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.

Kīhei brush fire results in temporary traffic impacts

Update(4:21 p.m., July 9, 2023): Pi’ilani Highway is now OPEN in Kīhei. It was closed earlier in the afternoon due to a brush fire between Ohukai Road and Kūlanihākoʻi Street.
