Maui police have launched a second degree murder investigation into the death of a 71-year-old man in Kahului, Thursday night.

A 17-year-old Lahaina male turned himself in on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in connection with the investigation of an organized retail theft of thousands of dollars in luxury items from Wailea retailers earlier in the week. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft and criminal conspiracy.

An unidentified suspect remains at-large after an armed robbery early Wednesday morning in which he allegedly stole a vehicle from a Maui couple before fleeing into nearby pastureland. 

The Maui Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own following an officer-involved shooting in Pāʻia, Friday night. Police say the caller reported that an unknown individual had trespassed onto the property and fired a weapon at them. Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed suspect, who discharged a firearm, striking one of the responding officers.

The women were extricated from deep within the tangled debris of the downed banyan tree, which fell the afternoon of July 12 on Kilauea Avenue, with preliminary observations indicating they were likely struck by falling tree limbs; police do not suspect foul play at this time and autopises will be conducted later this week to determine their exact cause of death.

Maui police have reopened all roads in Wailuku as of 11 p.m., after a nearly two hour closure due to a police investigation. The investigation also resulted in the evacuation of multiple streets in the area.

A 28-year-old Kula man suffered critical life-threatening injuries in a motorcycle crash on Makawao Avenue Sunday night.

A 13-year-old girl was arrested for Terroristic Threatening in connection with a threat at Kalama Intermediate School. The investigation remains ongoing and active for the other affected campuses where alleged threats occurred.

A 35-year Lahaina man was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries he suffered in a collision on the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Friday afternoon.

Maui Police Department Vehicular Homicide Unit Investigators request the public’s help regarding an ongoing fatal hit-and-run investigation. The investigation stems from a report of a man found lying in the road on Piʻikea Avenue in Kīhei around 4:05 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Maui police have since identified the suspect as Mike Pharisien, 51, of Haʻikū. He was being held on unrelated charges, according to an earlier press release. Maui police have also identified the victim of the suspected murder as 54-year-old Steven Holm, also of Haʻikū.

Maui police tell Maui Now that a male driver on Maui Veterans Highway sustained an apparent gunshot injury.  The investigation is still ongoing.

Police have since linked the investigation to a missing person report. No further information will be released on the incident. 

Maui police are investigating an incident at Kanahā Beach Park in which a suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at an county parks enforcement officer Thursday evening.

Maui police responded to a call on Thursday afternoon regarding an unresponsive male at the beach area of 76 South Kīhei Road.

The alarm company reported that while communicating with a subscriber via phone, they heard what sounded like gunshots.

The alleged pistol used in an incident involving an accidental shooting in Waiehu last weekend, is believed to be a Maui Police Department gun, police said today.

A 26-year-old man was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center after he was accidentally shot at a residence in Waiehu on Saturday night.

Maui Police Lieutenant Audra Sellers said, “Thus far, nothing has indicated foul play.” She said everyone that police have spoken to so far has cooperated and at this point the case is considered “active and open.”   

Maui police have closed a portion of East Līpoa Road in Kīhei between Liloa Road and Kupalaiki Loop (makai) due to an ongoing police investigation. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.
