County of Maui departments are responding to damage from last weekend’s storm while preparing for possible impacts from an incoming weather system that recently strengthened into Tropical Storm Moke. Meanwhile, emergency management officials are echoing calls for community members to stay prepared during this above-normal hurricane season.

With the first of two approaching Pacific weather systems possibly causing heavy rain and flooding over the weekend, the Hawaiʻi Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Insurance Division is encouraging residents to take steps now to make filing insurance claims easier after damage has occurred.

With Tropical Storm Lala on approach and a hurricane watch in effect for Hawaiʻi Island and surrounding waters, the Department of Land and Natural Resources is working to prepare communities across the state for severe weather.

The County of Maui Department of Agriculture encourages all ranchers, farmers and producers to finalize preparations ahead of Tropical Storm Lala, which is anticipated to strengthen into a hurricane before impacting Hawaiʻi Island as early as Saturday.

Steady strengthening is forecast, and Lala is expected to become a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 275 miles from the center.

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C, located about 900 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai’i. *The formation chance through 48 hours is high. at 90%.

Maui Emergency Management Agency, other County of Maui departments / agencies and the American Red Cross will proactively open shelters across Maui at 5 p.m. today, April 8, 2026, ahead of severe weather impacts. 

County crews are gearing up for storm response as impacts from a low pressure system begin impacting the state. Two shelters on Maui will proactively open at 5 p.m., including locations in Kīhei, and Wailuku. Residents and visitors on Maui and Molokaʻi are urged to conserve water as a precaution during this severe weather event.

County of Maui officials are urging residents to prepare for a third kona storm that may bring heavy rainfall to Maui County – just weeks after two back-to-back kona storms hit parts of Maui Nui in March. Meanwhile, County departments are taking steps to prepare while responding to damages from recent storms.

With the severe weather including thunderstorms and flash flooding forecast to arrive this week, Hawaiian Electric is proactively preparing to respond as it monitors developing weather conditions.

Hawaiian Electric is urging customers to prepare for extended power outages as a powerful kona storm system makes its way across the islands. While the company is monitoring conditions and preparing for storm-related outages, it does not anticipate implementing its Public Safety Power Shutoff Program despite false claims online.  

Hawaiian Electric urges customers to review family and business emergency plans, ensure they have supplies they need on hand, and keep close watch on the development of the storm.

The American Red Cross Pacific Islands Region is working with state and local emergency managers to prepare residents and visitors for impending storms which are predicted to impact all the Hawaiian Islands with high winds and major flooding.

Hawaiian Electric continues to trim trees and make additional preparations to respond to any impact from severe weather forecast for this weekend, including possible thunderstorms, strong winds and flooding. Hawaiian Electric is closely monitoring conditions and urges customers be prepared for possible power outages.

Crews are responding to storm-related outages on Hawaiʻi Island and the company also continues to coordinate with state and county emergency response officials. With the updated forecast, which includes rainfall and increased humidity, lessening the threat of wildfires, Hawaiian Electric has determined that a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) will no longer be considered as a safety measure at this time. 

As Hawaiʻi heads into another hurricane season, the American Red Cross is urging the public to prepare in advance.
