Maui police anticipate a crowd of at least 30,000 at the upcoming Halloween festivities in Lahaina this year, in part because the event falls on a Friday, just ahead of the weekend. The projections are slightly ahead of last year when an estimated 28,000 people attended the event.

The increase will more than double the admission for individuals, motorcycles and vehicle passes over the next few years. Haleakalā National Park on Maui is proposing an entrance fee hike that is scheduled to begin in 2015 and continue with incremental increases through 2017.

A 26-year-old Haʻikū man suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash when he lost control of the vehicle he was operating, failed to negotiate a turn, and collided into a tree on West Kuiaha Road on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Skin divers who were spearfishing in the area, found the vehicle underwater with a person still inside. The vehicle was found about 40 feet below the cliff, submerged in about 10 feet of water, and was 30 feet off the shoreline.
