County to host Right-of-Entry workshops for owners who lost properties in Maui fires

The County of Maui is holding two informational workshops on the Right-of-Entry (ROE) process to assist residential and commercial owners who lost Lahaina properties in the August wildfires. The ROE process is necessary for participation in the government-sponsored hazardous debris removal program. 

Weakening cold front moves to Big Island, two more rounds of showers expected

A slow-moving cold front dropped more than 3 inches of rain over parts of Maui over a 24-hour period ending at 7:45 a.m. today. The next front is forecast to deliver another round of gusty showers Thursday into Friday, with yet another round of showers forecast to potentially move through next week Tuesday.

High Surf Advisory, Coastal Flood Statement for Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu

A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday for the north and west facing shores of Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. There is also a Coastal Flood Statement in effect from tonight through early Saturday morning.

85-foot boat grounded in Kihei, Maui; breaks from mooring during strong winds

The Coast Guard is responding to an 85-foot vessel “Chaparral” that broke free of its mooring and ran aground near Sugar Beach, Maui, Tuesday.

The US Coast Guard and local agencies are responding to a foreign flagged sailing vessel that ran aground near Lahaina, Maui on Monday. Good Samaritans rescued eight people from the boat “Altego II” after it ran aground near Lahaina Harbor.

A Flash Flood Warning is canceled for the island of Maui as of 1:54 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024. The National Weather Service reports that heavy rain on Maui has ended, and flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Special Marine Warning with threat of thunderstorms and waterspouts

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Marine Warning for Big Island leeward, southeast and windward waters until 3:45 p.m. At 1:50 p.m., a line of showers capable of producing waterspouts and wind gusts over 34 knots was located over FAD Buoy A, or near Discovery Harbour, moving northeast at 30 knots. Waterspouts and wind gusts 34 knots or greater are in the forecast.

Update: Tornado Warning canceled for Molokaʻi, Flood Advisory until 11:30 p.m., Jan. 8, 2024

The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency reports that the Tornado Warning that was in effect for Molokaʻi through 7:45 p.m. has since been canceled, but the public is advised to be aware of changing weather conditions this evening.
