Monday Morning MIL: Family feeling as coaches, athletes with Maui ties return for wrestling meet
The 55th annual Garner Ivey Maui Invitational Wrestling Tournament brought the Forest Grove High School teams from Oregon, led by Baldwin High School alumnus Guy Takahashi. Also at the meet was Frank Johnson, the Linfield University head coach, who was recruiting the talent at the meet that also included high school teams from around the state.
Monday Morning MIL: Seabury Hall’s Yu, Maui High’s Arisumi win air riflery titles
Arisumi successfully defended her girls MIL individual crown, while Yu’s gold medal is his first win in four years of competing. The MIL will send 13 girls and 12 boys to the state tournament Oct. 29 on O’ahu.
Update: Kīhei brush fire burns 35 acres, 100% contained; cause appears to be accidental
The brush fire that began on July 31 in Kīhei was called 100% contained at 4:30 p.m. today. Hot spots still remain within the perimeter. The acreage is unchanged. MFD units will continue to make checks and address hot spots throughout this afternoon and into the overnight hours.
Volleyball officials ‘desperately’ needed for Maui Interscholastic League
The nonprofit Maui County Volleyball Officials organization, is actively recruiting for the upcoming High School Volleyball seasons during the 2024-2025 school year. No experience is necessary; training and equipment will be provided. While scheduling is flexible, training will be prioritized for those with a minimum of two days availability per week. Games are Tuesday-Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Maui Council passes bill for Kūlanihākoʻi Gulch sediment removal
Council Member Tom Cook applauded the Maui County Council’s passage today of a bill to authorize the county to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the federal government to support a sediment-removal project for Kūlanihākoʻi Gulch in North Kīhei.

The funding includes $354,000 to Mālama Haleakalā Foundation to do site assessment and preliminary design for a detention basin along Kūlanihāko’i Stream. There’s also $255,300 for Molokaʻi Land Trust to wetland restoration planning.

An estimated 500 Lahainaluna High School students reported Thursday to their temporary school site at Kūlanihākoʻi High for their first day of in-person instruction. Lahainaluna students were welcomed by Kūlanihākoʻi students and staff cheering and waving signs at the drop-off area on campus.

A federal grant of $25,000,000 has been secured for the Līloa Drive extension in Kīhei on Maui as part of Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America Agenda. The project will extend Līloa Drive by 2,900 lineal feet and notes the addition of two more roundabouts to the South Maui community.
