The spirit of summer returns to Maui with the 2025 Bon Dance season, a cherished cultural tradition that blends Buddhist reflection with joyful community celebration. Beginning in early June and running through mid-August, temples across the island will once again open their grounds to the public for evenings of dancing, music, food and remembrance.

Tournament officials announced today that The Sentry is contributing a tournament record $747,704 to local nonprofits, continuing to drive impact on Maui as a result of its 2025 event.

There is no tsunami expected after a preliminary magnitude 4.0 earthquake reported at 9:38 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 off the Kaʻū Coast of the Big Island. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an information statement saying there is no tsunami expected, however some areas may have experienced shaking.

Sergio Gabaudan, 28, of Kīhei was reported missing by a family member on Monday, May 19, 2025, after failing to show up to work on Sunday, May 18, 2025.  He was last seen leaving his residence in Kīhei on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., and calls to his cell phone remain unanswered. 

Several Hawaiʻi-born actors are hitting the big screen in the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” when it opens in theaters this Friday, May 23. Among them is Kaipo Dudoit of Oʻahu who plays the role of David Kawena.

Winners of the 2025 Maui Matsuri Art Contest, sponsored by HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts Maui, have been announced and their prized art pieces are on display at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Shopping Center.

The effort is part of the Department’s farm-to-school initiative, which aims to enhance food sustainability in Hawaiʻi and aligns with the goals of Act 175 to improve student health while supporting local farmers.

In 32 videos, students shared the stories of trees and forests that helped shape their lives.

The HDS Tooth Fairy Fun Day, a popular annual event on Oʻahu that makes oral health education fun for keiki, is coming to Maui this summer. The HDS Tooth Fairy Fun Day will be at the Maui Ocean Center, 192 Māʻalaea Road in Wailuku on Sunday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free for kamaʻāina.

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation is now accepting reservations for the next screening of E Hoʻi Ka Nani I Mokuʻula (Let the Glory Return to Mokuʻula) on Friday, June 13 at 6 p.m. at The Sphere at Maui Ocean Center. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.

Mālama Hāmākua Maui, in collaboration with the Maui Invasive Species Committee, is seeking volunteers to help with coqui frog control efforts this Tuesday and Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

This camp is part of the UA Next All-America Camp Series — it is Hawaiʻi’s premier football showcase, providing local athletes with instruction, verified combine testing, and a shot at national exposure. In three previous years, the camp has helped nearly 40 Hawaiʻi athletes earn NCAA Division I scholarships valued at over $4 million and produced multiple UA All-Americans.

Kamehameha Schools Maui Cody Gardanier went from never having competed in track and field before his senior year to state champion in the boys high jump on May 9.
