UH: Kīlauea volcano ash prompts largest open ocean phytoplankton bloom

A rare and large summertime phytoplankton bloom in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre in summer 2018 was prompted by ash from Kīlauea falling on the ocean surface approximately 1,200 miles west of the volcano.

County DWS to hold online community meeting April 24

County of Maui Department of Water Supply is inviting the community to attend an online meeting Thursday, April 24, 2025, from noon to 1 p.m. The meeting will introduce County partner US Water Alliance, a national nonprofit that will hold in-person events next month that focus on Maui island drinking water supply.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Maui until 4:30 p.m. At 1:18 p.m., emergency management reported heavy rain over the slopes and summit of Haleakalā. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour.

DOH reports seventh travel-related dengue virus case of 2025

The Hawai‘i Department of Health has confirmed a new travel-related case of dengue virus on Oʻahu, bringing the total number of dengue cases to seven in the state in 2025 (one on Maui, six on Oʻahu). The affected individual in this current case was exposed to the virus while traveling in a region where dengue is common. This case is unrelated to the dengue cases reported on April 10 and 11, 2025.
