Dec. 6, 2021 COVID-19 Update: 148 New Cases, 1 Death

In Maui County, the seven day average for new cases daily is 16, with a 1.6% test positivity rate over 14 days. This is -7% from Nov. 21 to Dec. 4, 2021. For every 100,000 residents in Maui County, there have been an average of 9.6 newly reported cases per day over the last seven days.

Below are storm photos from what the National Weather Service reported as Maui County’s “heaviest rainfall.” The rainfall was expected to cause “catastrophic flooding and affect areas that do not usually flood.”

Kīhei Community Center Operating as Emergency Shelter

The Maui Emergency Management Agency in conjunction with the American Red Cross has opened the Kīhei Community Center as an emergency shelter to those affected by the heavy rain and flooding in South Maui.  The shelter is located at 303 East Līpoa Street in central Kīhei.

Police say Hāna Highway is closed fronting Bladwin Beach Park due to a motor vehicle collision. Motorists should avoid the area and use alternate routes. We also have reports of a power pole leaning over the roadway in the area.

In Maui County, the seven day average for new cases daily is 17, with a 1.7% test positivity rate over 14 days. This is -2% from Nov. 20 to Dec. 3, 2021. For every 100,000 residents in Maui County, there have been an average of 10.0 newly reported cases per day over the last seven days.

Flood WARNING for Maui Until 12:15 a.m., Molokaʻi Until 12:30 a.m.

At 6:25 p.m. HST, radar showed rain continuing to move over the slopes of Haleakalā from the south. Rain rates of 2-3 inches per hour were occurring over the Kaupō Gap area, and 1-2 inches per hour near ʻOheʻo Gulch. Heavy rainfall will also be moving over central and west Maui during the next several hours.

Emergency Management Agency Urges Preparedness as Kona Low Impacts Hawai‘i

Periods of extremely heavy rainfall are expected as a Kona Low develops west of Kauaʻi, and pulls deep moisture over the islands. A slow-moving band of heavy rain is expected to move over the Big Island and Maui County today, spreading to Oʻahu and Kauaʻi County tonight and Monday. Widespread rainfall total amounts of 10 to 15 inches are anticipated, with isolated areas of 20 to 25 inches possible.

Piʻilani Highway at Pahihi Gulch Washed Out at Mile 29-30

As of 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, the Piʻilani Highway at Pahihi Gulch will remain closed for the remainder of the day as weather continues to affect the area. The road was washed out between Mile 29 and 30 earlier today.

Made In Maui County In-Person Event Rescheduled Due To Inclement Weather

Due to the current and continuing stormy weather over Maui County and flood concerns, the 8th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Made In Maui County Festival must postpone the in-person shopping event previously scheduled for Saturday Dec. 4, 2021 at War Memorial Stadium Events Field.
