The November 2022 Bayanihan Food Distribution will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022 at the Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului at 780 Oneheʻe Avenue across from Maui Waena School. 

Maui United Way has been awarded a $5,000 grant through the United to Feed Innovation Challenge that it will use to continue the development of a layered mapping technology tool. The tool identifies gaps in the local food system to assess community needs, costs, and what kind of food is being grown within the county to help address food security gaps.  

The new facility would attract and house visiting scientists and could enable Maui to foster local economic development and career opportunities. The nonprofit has outgrown its current facilities. 

A Brown Water Advisory has been issued in West Maui from Kapalua to Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park. The Salvation Army will be providing over 6,000 Thanksgiving holiday meals across Hawaii between now and Thanksgiving Day – including a Thanksgiving Meal and Hunger & Homeless Resource Fair in Kahului on Nov. 17 and in Lahaina on Nov. 22.

On Maui, Common Ground Collective utilizes field work and research to create food security and economic opportunity for Maui communities. With this award, CGC will work to decrease Maui’s reliance on imported goods by enhancing the local food system, support local agricultural producers by providing distribution assistance to new local growers, and expand the capacity of local food businesses to contribute to the island’s regional food system and those in need.

Haleakalā National Park released a new film, Heart of Maui.  This 7.5 minute documentary follows two biologists working to save Hawaiʻi’s critically endangered forest birds. The film describes the cause of the birds’ catastrophic decline and what is at risk if action is not taken soon.

Presented in partnership with OCEAN Organic Farm and Distillery, Welcome Home the Whales celebrates the annual return of humpback whales to Maui Nui waters with an in-person fundraising event Nov. 17 and an online auction, which began on Nov. 4, both benefiting ocean conservation nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation.

For the first time in history, the blocks from the National AIDS Memorial Quilt representing individuals lost in Hawaiʻi will be on display for viewing. Seen for the first time on Maui, organizers say this is an extremely rare and meaningful opportunity to pay tribute to those lost within the local community.

A team from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project, a Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit organization, returned to Honolulu recently aboard the 185-ft ship M/V Imua with another 53 tons (105,655 pounds) of marine debris removed from reefs and beaches of the islands and atolls within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.  

After two years of virtual events, Hawaiian Paddle Sports invites the community together to Paddle For Hunger in support of Maui Food Bank and its mission to feed the hungry.

With just 504 votes separating Maui Council Chair Alice Lee, and challenger Noelani Ahia in the fourth summary report for the race for the Council’s Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū residency seat, the outstanding ballots have the potential to impact the outcome of that particular race.

Hawaiʻi – All Islands – Learning Endeavors will host a Virtual GIS Day Event on Nov. 16, 2022 in celebration of Geography Awareness Week for Schools across the state. The event features GIS professionals presenting Live to students and educators about their work that uses GIS – Geographic Information Systems, also known as digital mapping software.
