Kīlauea’s south flank has been the site of 40 earthquakes of magnitude-4.0 or greater during the past 20 years. Most are caused by abrupt motion of the volcano’s south flank, which moves to the southeast over the oceanic crust. The location, depth, and waveforms recorded as part of today’s earthquake are consistent with slip along the steep faults of the pali.

The state Department of Health reports that there were 93 additional COVID-19 cases in Hawai‘i on Friday, including 85 confirmed cases and eight cases that were identified as probable. 2-5 Tropical Cyclones Predicted in 2021 Central Pacific Hurricane Season Outlook
For the season as a whole, 2 to 5 tropical cyclones are predicted for the Central Pacific hurricane region. This number includes tropical depressions, named storms and hurricanes. A near-normal season has 4 or 5 tropical cyclones.
