Maui Mayor Michael Victorino says he’ll look at potentially closing beach parks and reinstating other restrictions if the county continues to see double digit new cases over the next few days.

The funding is part of a competitive grant program for Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions to promote educational equity for underrepresented students, expand education programs, and provide job training in these fields.

Individuals, organizations and counties are planting trees across the state on Oct. 30, 2020. The goal is to plant 100,000 trees, with 10,000 volunteers, on 1,000 sites in an effort to reduce the effects of climate change and beautify our islands.

Mayor Michael Victorino today addressed “rumors and misinformation” he said is spreading on social media about resort bubbles and public beach access. “There has never been any consideration to privatize beaches. All beach parks, beaches and public access to beaches are open and will remain open,” he said.

Kīlauea monitoring data for the past month show variable but typical rates of seismicity and ground deformation, low rates of sulfur dioxide emissions, and only minor geologic changes since the end of eruptive activity in September 2018.

The state has reported another triple digit increase in new COVID-19 cases with 220 new cases today including 202 on Oʻahu, 14 on Maui and four on Hawaiʻi Island.  This marks the fifth consecutive day that the daily count has exceeded 200, with a record breaking 355 cases reported on Thursday.  More than 96% of the active cases statewide are on the island of Oʻahu.

Hawai‘i Nature Center will offer a program for students, ages 6 to 11, in anticipation of school campus closures during some weekdays. Outdoor EDventure Days will incorporate State of Hawai‘i Next Generation Science Standards and explore a range of topics led by environmental educators including climate change, the ahupua‘a ecosystem, native species and cycles of nature.

There is no tsunami expected after a preliminary 3.6 magnitude earthquake reported at 5:46 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020 in the summit region of Kīlauea Volcano on Hawaiʻi Island.

\Maui police are seeking the public’s help in locating Ryan Rodriguez, 28, who was reported missing at around 8:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2020. Rodriguez was last seen, shortly before 8:20 p.m., walking in the area of Kauhale Street wearing a white T-shirt and tan shorts with no shoes.

Maui County’s largest annual products show, the Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival, will return this year as a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in its seventh year, the popular event will kick off online during the first weekend of November.
